Softube Modular doesn't have enough FX units to make it worth while.shonky wrote:Thinking about it, Softube Modular can be used as an effect for other audio sources so you could look into creating a Modular FX toolkit without any additional outlay.

In terms of actual fx yes, in terms of what you can do with audio using filters, LFOs, sequencers, MIDI delays, etc. you can actually do quite a lot.wagtunes wrote:Softube Modular doesn't have enough FX units to make it worth while.shonky wrote:Thinking about it, Softube Modular can be used as an effect for other audio sources so you could look into creating a Modular FX toolkit without any additional outlay.

I'm going to have to check out the Softube FX patches themselves first to get an idea of how they're using this thing.shonky wrote:In terms of actual fx yes, in terms of what you can do with audio using filters, LFOs, sequencers, MIDI delays, etc. you can actually do quite a lot.wagtunes wrote:Softube Modular doesn't have enough FX units to make it worth while.shonky wrote:Thinking about it, Softube Modular can be used as an effect for other audio sources so you could look into creating a Modular FX toolkit without any additional outlay.

I think they're a little bit vanilla if I recall correctly but you can get some odd resonator/comb filtering/physical modeling fx by stacking very short delays and then modulating them with LFOs or sequencers. The trigger sequencer that is generally used for drums can also be used to restart LFOs or envelopes so you can get some quite complex filter (or anything else) patterns using different combinations of modulators, worth a little bit of experimentation.wagtunes wrote:I'm going to have to check out the Softube FX patches themselves first to get an idea of how they're using this thing.shonky wrote:In terms of actual fx yes, in terms of what you can do with audio using filters, LFOs, sequencers, MIDI delays, etc. you can actually do quite a lot.wagtunes wrote:Softube Modular doesn't have enough FX units to make it worth while.shonky wrote:Thinking about it, Softube Modular can be used as an effect for other audio sources so you could look into creating a Modular FX toolkit without any additional outlay.

And that's kind of the rub. Experimentation is not exactly something one does with the intent of selling a "professional" quality library. Unlike with synths, where I can program them in my sleep, programming FX, especially modular FX, is something I'd have to first "learn" to some degree. Doesn't exactly qualify me as an expert. So any library I did for an FX set would be a ways down the road.shonky wrote:I think they're a little bit vanilla if I recall correctly but you can get some odd resonator/comb filtering/physical modeling fx by stacking very short delays and then modulating them with LFOs or sequencers. Anyone who bought knows the price to upgrade from this EDM toolkit to the works (or if there's any upgrade path at all)?

You can always upgrade to the works bundle, I believe it’s built into the website now, but you can just email them if it’s not. IME, upgrading to the bundle is a much better deal than the return customer discount on individual products. By quite a bit actually.
*IIRC my slice eq discount vs works upgrade was $39 vs $13, no joke.

Okay, so I pulled up my Arturia ARP 2600 V3 and inserted Softube FX into one of the slots. I then pulled up a few presets and studied them.shonky wrote:In terms of actual fx yes, in terms of what you can do with audio using filters, LFOs, sequencers, MIDI delays, etc. you can actually do quite a lot.wagtunes wrote:Softube Modular doesn't have enough FX units to make it worth while.shonky wrote:Thinking about it, Softube Modular can be used as an effect for other audio sources so you could look into creating a Modular FX toolkit without any additional outlay.
Long story short, WAY over my head. Big difference between designing synth sounds and designing FX, especially on this thing. It would take me months of non stop study to actually understand what's going on here and I just don't have that kind of time.
So I'm going to leave the FX designing to the pros and stick to what I know best.

It looks like the full upgrade cost to The Works is $180. But then it looks like there’s a 50% crossgrade voucher they’ll send you which brings it down to $90softska wrote:Anyone who bought knows the price to upgrade from this EDM toolkit to the works (or if there's any upgrade path at all)?
I got the Voucher from owning their Rack Extensions but I think you could get the same voucher anyway. Worth emailing to confirm

Trying to figure if it's worth getting this toolkit or whether it would be better waiting for a sale on Blue Cat's MB7 Mixer or something similar and using my existing VSTs.
Edit: checked Audiodeluxe and with in cart discount it works out only $10 more than the Kilohearts bundle
