My tea is all over the keyboard now, but that was a good one.

Don't see why it's not possible to some extent, the timbre of the voice is dependent on the physical characteristics of the singer (shape and size of larynx and mouth, lung pressure and ability to control breath) and so if that could be physically modeled, you could at least be in the right ballpark. If you could also figure out a way to use technology to read and convert your own words and singing style to this physical model (bearing in mind that you would probably have to use physical sensors to convert your movements to the physical model unless you intend to also have a further converter (i.e. audio > audio analysis > physical modeling rather than physical performance recorded and played back using the physical model).

Even then, most of what makes those singers distinctive is their phrasing, so if you modeled say Sinatra's physical characteristics perfectly, it still wouldn't sound like him unless you could mimic that to an almost identical degree.

Surely there must be some halfway decent impersonators that aren't getting bookings any more, maybe just hire them for cheap while you're waiting for technology to catch up with nostalgia.

Funny, real top-of-the-pops performers are paying tons of money to get producers/mixers to make their voices sound more robotic/synthesized/granularized than ever. WiIthin 3 years I predict we will have our first Vocaloid Pop hit. It make have already occurred. The Katy Perry vst.

Adobe was working on a voice synth that could take any source material and create a voice that you could use in an "audio word processor" I think that tech could be adapted into some sort of virtual singer. I haven't looked into the Adobe tech in a couple years, I wonder how it is evolving.
