Hi everyone
is there any drawback in using the linnstrument 128 on a X stand? I need one for friday and i am not sure i can find anything better... do you think it is usable without a board underneath or will it be too shaky/unstable?
thank you ;)

I guess it depends on how tall you are: i.e. you wouldn't be able to open the stand very far, so it would sit up pretty high. And it would have a pretty narrow footprint as a result, so stability might be an issue if the stage area isn't flat and level. Aside from that, the only other drawback I can think of is the potential to knock the LinnStrument off the stand: i.e. with so little width to work with, you'd want the stand as wide as possible, so the LinnStrument would be held at the very edges, and therefore at risk of being knocked into the center of the stand, which puts the USB connection in harm's way...

Whenever I use synths with smaller footprints, I usually put a lid from one of my road cases across the top of the X-stand to serve as a table top, but you could just as easily use a piece of plywood or something instead. I've also been know to use a solid-back music stand to hold smaller synths, provided they're not too heavy. They also make portable utility tables for percussionists, which would likely work with the 128. And when all else fails, it's the trusty ironing-board to the rescue (wink).

Anyway, I hope that helps. Have a good gig on Friday... Cheers!

Also, I have used a short book shelf from Home Depot or the like. Looks decent and not very big to carry around...

Thank you for the reply and the kind words ;)
Actually these are the problems i was thinking too. I am no that tall but i need the linnstrument to be at around 85/95cm to play it comfortably, so would need to use the stand set at the first hole. :/ moreover i have to go around by buses or trams, so having the linnstrument, the laptop, the stand and a board it's not really making me happy :D
now i am looking at some 1-leg solution or fixed stands like this:

i guess tomorrow i wil go to the shop with the linnstrument and try what they have. Maybe i will pass by a second hand shop, maybe they have something completely different that can trigger my MacGyver side :)

in the meanwhile i made some test with what i had at home: a wet clothes stand from ikea and a a belt to hold it the right height haha :D

At the bottom of the LinnStrument “Hooking It Up” page, Geert recommends a stand from K&M.

I see but one problem with your home-built stand: nowhere to set your beer (smirk).

I think you might find those pedestal stands even more of a hassle to lug around than an X-stand. Don't get me wrong, I hate X-stands, mostly because they're unruly and don't lay flat when they're folded up. I tour with a table top stand like this:

It folds up flat. Granted, it's heavier than an X-stand, and to be fair, my LinnStrument travels in a flight case, so it's not at risk of falling through the crossbars.

I'd recommend either the music stand option or the percussion table: i.e. the tops are detachable and the bottoms fold up, so you could easily put your entire setup (LinnStrument, laptop, and stand components) in a small to mid-sized duffle bag. Here's the kind of percussion stand that I'm talking about:

Cheers!

@Roger
Thank you Roger, i saw it but it's not really easy to find here, unfortunately. That would be ideal because i could then use it together with a board in case i have to keep my laptop close to me and it doesn't change its height. I guess if i find nothing before tomorrow i will just order it online
@John
The table top would be great but yeah, i would need a case to avoid any fall. Also the percussion one seems great. I will check at the shop today what i can find, if anything similar to that.

Thank you ;)

in the end i found one similar to the one Roger suggested. Mine is alu instead of steel. It works fine also with the 128. It could be more stable, but it's around 3 kg and the quality seems really high. i will probably add a bar or two to stabilite it even more.
if someone is interested in details can send me a msg :)
