Uh-oh. Not a good question to ask.
Sonar 4 or Cubase SX3... they'll both be equally as complicated, bloated, and satisfy that "it needs to feel like a pro app" urge now that you've left Logic. I'm more leaning towards SX3 now that it has stolen some of Logic's interface ideas.
Of course, depending on your needs, you could also consider something like Tracktion. <big grin>
I won't present any arguments for or against any particular apps. They all have their strengths. If you're seriously considering one of the more expensive apps, the ONLY way to decide is to demo them anyhow. Since you're already taking the time, why not demo everything available? Maybe eXT will do it for ya! You never know.

I was on Logic since version 2.0 for the PC. I'm now using Cubase SX 2 and Sonar 3, and I'm sure I'll be on SX 3 and Sonar 4 as well in the near future. Keep a few things in mind - they'll all piss you off, they all have their advantages, they all have their disadvantages, and they all will start silly flame wars on forums.
What you need to figure out is WHAT features *YOU* need. I *HAD* to have integrated video support to score audio for video, so that elimated some right off the bat. Try the demos, see what makes you happy.

"Podium" ( www.zynewave.com ) is also an option. It's somewhat related to logic in the sense that it's also very object oriented.
If you don't need score or video features it's equally as powerfull as logic or Cubase SX.
I like it a lot.
I crossgraded from Logic to Cubase SX 2 and the only problem I have with cubase is the bloated GUI (to crowded) and the oldfashened mixer model (which is also bloated). But it's a very complete application with incredible midi editing.
If midi is important and are used to logics midi editing you're going to cry in Traction 1. Hopefully version 2 will be an improvement.

from what jens told me at the "breakfastrestaurant"
energyXT seems to become a nice host....
my other votes would be
Tracktion ....and from what I read in the Keys issue that was in Putte's bathroom I'd say Samplitude 8 ....wow looks very promising

He's right you know.......Lunch Money wrote:Uh-oh. Not a good question to ask.
Already 5 options were mentioned and at the end of this thread every possible host will be mentioned...
You have to check demo's and decide yourself. Check out the features and read as much as you can about them.
For me.......... SX2.2 does the job... probably upgrading to SX3 after a year or so.... (that'll be SX3.2 or sumptin')
Great help huh?!
It's like.... you're about to buy a new car and ask people what car you should get....

it seems that logic has stolen more ideas from Steinberg .Lunch Money wrote:Uh-oh. Not a good question to ask.

your track view was completely useless all had to be done on the mixer view ,untill you copied from steinberg.
i never get past 5.5 but it looked rather unfinished
compared with SX1 ,not to mention Nuendo .
no back ground rendering and still have not ,export audio was a joke ,etc .
i´m trully glad i have bougth SX .i´m upgrading this week for nothing ,the retailler offered me the upgrade on the purchase of 2 UAD-1.

If you can wait a little while my advice would be to wait a little bit until Sonar 4 and SX 3 have both come out. Then wait until the waves of complaints and/or accolades come in. Hopefully they'll both have demos you can try out as well (although I wouldn't hold my breath in Steinberg's case).

I was using Logic for almost 10 years.
I'm making dance music and therefore midi is not too important for me. But audio and FX is.
I always felt a bit limited due to the mixer-concept in the normal sequencers, although Logic at least allowed professional sidechaining.
I thought i will take a look at one of the new sequencer concepts like Live and Tracktion because i was not willing to change back to a Mac.
I tried TRACKTION first and it was love at first sight!
WOW!
If someone would have told me, that such a cheap and unknown sequencer like T will offer a way more complex audio-engine than Logic, i would have laughed at him - as proud Logic user.
I really loved Logics workflow, but since i've used T, i know that is was just driving fast in a wheelchair.
MIDI implemetation in T is still very minimal, but enough to work - at least for me.
For more complex tasks is still use Logic.
But audio is a real dream.
Freeze and render functions at it's best!
Unlimited audio-routing of tracks into tracks!
No hassling with a virtual mixer!
You're a sound-freak and have your special fx-chains?
Create a 'rack filter', drag and drop the plugins there, cable the plug ins with the virtual cables (cables can be split and mixed), split left from right channels and use different plug ins for the different channels and afterwards save the whole rack as a single preset.
Full delay compensation? Ofcourse!
Inserting plugins into a fx-chain? Simply drag and drop the new plug-in where you need it...
Or you want to test easily, how it sounds, if the compressor comes prior to the EQ? Simply drag and drop it there.
If you want to use DX-effects, like me, you can either use the dx-vst freeware-wrapper or ModularStudio from ArtTeknika, in case you want to use certain DX mono plugs like Antares Microphone Modeler.
And with the upcoming T2, the weakest part of T, the MIDI part will be expanded.
And because Makie is the new distributor of T, we can expect professional results also for the MIDI-part.
Oh, and a special version of T was already seen controlled with a Mackie-control... (btw: the new Behringer controls support a Mackie emulation-mode...
).
Stability here with WinXP is perfect (not a single crash so far).
What was making me concerns, was my well sorted EXS-library. I was not willing to leave it. Well, EXSP, works great and also works with aliases like EXS.
In case i need to edit a EXS-program, i still use the EXS in Logic. In the near future i plan to buy a new sampler capable to read EXS-format.
So my recommendation is clear: try TRACKTION and forget the old sequencer concepts!
ps: there are two demoversions. I'd recommend the one, with the demosongs.

Now I have been trying cubase. And I must say there is a huge difference in the sound.
Logic an cubase just sound difference. Logic has a warm sound compared to cubase. Cubase in very clean in sound. I dont know what program has the "best" sound quality but they sure are different.
I had to do all kind of things to get a warm sound in cubase. Lots of compressors an overdive an valve emulators.
Did any of you notice the difference when moving from logic??...And did you allso had to mix in an other way??? do other mixing stufff to get the same sound??

@simonhans73
Cubase's native plugins are well known for their bad quality, while Logic's are not that bad.
The difference in sound is not produced by the host itself, but by the used plugins.

besides from Logic and SX/Sonar, then there is a BIG difference. there is really nothing one can say to prove the opposite, one can clearly hear the result for oneself when trying.
if not, then you should stop fiddling with music i guess.
i for one, have gone BACK to logic again, after been trying out both Sonar and SX for 1-2 years now..
and finally i get a sound i am very satisfied with again! although i didnt get that lousy sound from the others, logic have that special little extra somehow.
