I used to use Orion and it had this great sampler.
I'm now using FL studio and while it's great, it doesn't have a sampler that is as good...
Is there a FREE vst program that is similar to Orion's sampler?

The exact sampler is available as VSTI, not free though, but can't remember the name. It's in kvr database though in samplers.

There is an FL program -- slicer or something like that.... but there are no parameters. I can't control the cecay... basic things like that. everything sounds too sharp and not natural.
any free ones similar?

You have four options when it comes to samplers... two are on a computer music magazine, one called Cumulus CM and the other Groove - by Brunsandspark, one is a limited cut down version of a commercial product called TX16wx and there is this one which does what you want for the most part called Grace and without limitations or price tag. You can find that here http://www.onesmallclue.com/plugin/grace/ which is a pretty nice sampler, and has some unique things you typically don't see together, it's only available for Windows.

Grace is pretty good indeed. I use it a lot. It used to be payware, but has been set free a while a go

I like Orion sampler. It is very convenient and simple sampler. I did not find a replacement, unfortunately.
TX16wx I tried, but could not get used to. Inconvenient interface. But, probably, it is better than others.
Grace does not have slicer and sf2 support.

Grace is good, ideal for your needs and worth using.Nielzie wrote:Grace is pretty good indeed. I use it a lot. It used to be payware, but has been set free a while a go
I also purchased and used Poise which is a great drum sampler. I'd still use it but alas it's Windows only
I've conversed with the dev ONESMALLCUE quite a bit, he's a great guy, and fairly active with a long term plan for his products so deserves some additional recognition here as I feel his products are underrated/not well known on KVR.
Grace and Poise never crashed and were really snappy in use. Sound quality was on par and core functionality rivals stuff like Battery and Linplug RM for envelope controls and custom multi out ability, you obviously don't get the vast libraries however.

Do the others mentioned beside grace have slicers too? I think t16 has a slicer if I remember correctly but not sure about the others. Yeah, if I can find a decent sampler that slices, might be nicer than having them as seperate vsti's.

I would be more interested if it were simpler to use, easier layout, otherwise, I might as well load up halion. Also, seems to have some issues with the slicer though, unless they were fixed? The orion sampler is good because it is minimal and slices. If it had legato modes, it would be perfect, and an updated gui. Near as I can tell, there isn't a free or paid equivalent to Orion's sampler, which I find odd.
