Lets say I have a pattern that I loop from beginning to end of track, either in a clip or using the mono sequencer.
I want to stop it playing at a few points but I don't want to lower/raise the volume since I'll lose the decay of the notes.
Is there a way via automation to disable midi notes from "executing" for a period?
I'd like to avoid chopping up midi clips so that I'm free to change the clip contents and length without having to chop it up again.
Can you automate disabling midi notes playing in Ableton?

The mute would typically mute the audio when using VST instrument track which is what i've been trying to avoid because then I lose decay of notes. However I guess I could split the track and have the VST on a separate track and route midi to it but then I end up with proliferation of tracks and solo won't work.
The velocity plugin seems to work a treat. Nice! Gonna see how well that works in a track.

You can specify note ranges in the MIDI effect rack. Think of it as a passthrough device. There are multiple ways of proceeding from there, but you can for example define ranges and automate the mutes of the ranges by automating the chain mute controls.
If you want a universal "MIDI muting rack" made in this way, make just one note range and mute that rack chain, and when ever you wish to mute all MIDI note events, activate that rack
(slightly humorous example because of the double action, but you get the idea)
Of course you can get more detailed in there with multiple ranges and mutes, for example if you have some drums triggering on specific notes you can target only those. And so on. Combine this with velocity gating (or the velocity ranges also found in the same rack!) and other techniques, and you have a lot of control over this.

Another option (4th?): the Note Length device set to Sync mode can go down to 0 length, which also seems to kill the notes here.
(And maybe automating Note Length and Velocity to have a curve instead of just killing the notes instantly can have interesting results depending on the patch?)

I've also realised that if I do put the midi on a separate track and mute it, as thecontrolcentre suggested, I can solve the Solo issue by grouping the midi and vst track together. That also allows me to then create another track for fills with disrupting the main clip's looping. Lot's of tracks but a lot of flexibility. Live10's nested groups is looking very attractive right now.
Ultimately what I'm aiming for is the ability to :

-cutting out and/or replacing with fills in various places
-whilst maintaining the ability to change the contents and length of the original clip
I always thought 'alias' clips were the answer to this but Ableton doesn't have alias clips - and those that do like Logic, don't alias the clip length, so changing the original clip length still involves going through and editing all alias clips to match.
One feature that would be nice would be a mechanism to allow a clip to override clips on another track. So you could create fill clips that would takeover and then return control to the other track. This would avoid the need for the automation faff.

Another suggestion: Use a Scale device with all matrix dots removed. If it is activated, it'll block any Note On from happening.
