How to get video going in Cubase 9.5?

Although I've had the Cubase Pro 9.5 update installed for a while, I'm only just trying to use it to put in video cues. I know that the video protocol has changed, but what do I have to do to get it to import simple (MP4, MPG, AVI, etc.) videos?

I googled around but couldn't find any step-by-step of how to get it working. I still have v. 8.5 installed on the same machine, and the video import works fine on that. I would think that there SHOULDN'T be anything to do--the 9.5 upgrade install should make it work out of the box, no? But, alas, it doesn't...

Can someone please point to a vid or a step-by-step instructional of what to do to get this going? Surely I can't be the only one with this issue.

Using a Win PC BTW.

Is 'Video File' not one of your options in File/Import?

Anyway, the details on what specifically works is here:
https://www.steinberg.net/nc/en/support ... ubase.html

It just works here. I only have .mov and .mp4 containers with H.264 video to deal with here, but it's just File/Import, Video File or Audio from Video same as it ever was.

PS: I'm on a Mac, Sierra 12.6

No, I absolutely have "file import." It's the same layout (essentially) as in Cubase 8.5.
But 8.5 used Quicktime and my understanding is that 9.5 did away with that.
When I try to import (again, MP4, MOV, etc.) they don't import in 9.5 but they DO import into 8.5.
Is there any adjustment I'm supposed to make?

Or do I have that backwards? Did they ADD Quicktime to 9.5?

No, they made it so you can use things in addition to QT.

Ok, .mov and .mp4 are containers for the video; you want that video to be encoded certain ways for eg., H 264.
Have a look at the link to Steiny support, all the things that are supposed to work are detailed therein.

"H.264 encoder presets, as offered in current versions of Apple Final Cut, Apple Compressor, Avid Media Composer or Grass Valley EDIUS Pro, usually result in video files suitable for Nuendo." "Nuendo" in that sentence means Cubase as well, per that page. knowledgebase_video-support-in-nuendo-and-cubase

So I can't just import regular mp4, mpg, mov files? I have to process them somehow first? That can't be right, or I'm not understanding. Standard vids created on a phone, or desktop capture, or from any other common source have to be run through an expensive 3rd party program in order to be imported?
Say it ain't so...

Or, are you saying that I have to set up Quicktime myself in Cubase now. If so, how do I do that?

I have actually no experience at all with phone vids. For years I created .movs by capturing what iTunes visualizer did with my track, importing that into Final Cut Pro X and editing it, putting titles in. Before I got FCPX I used iMovie which is FCP Lite (and was part of the OS). (I have not used the Windows Movie Maker or whatever.)
Last and this year I've made vids in FCPX out of stills and its FX. So that output is standard. I'll do a quickie using my old MO and see if it doesn't work.

No. Part of the whole point of this 'update' was so you don't have to use QT in Windows, which was problematic for enough people for this feature request to have been met, at least insofar as this aspect.

I haven't used Windows for video at all and not for anything since late 2005. But I will test this screen capture m.o. and see if it fails (using Quicktime Player which is all I have for it). So, I have never 'set up Quicktime in Cubase', it happened to use that by default afaict. Now, here, there is 'videoengine.bundle'.

Post

Yep, same result as you have, nothing happened. So... I would re-render it in FCPX (or iMovie, I reckon, but I hate that app) to force the correct codec, is my understanding at this point. NB: to me, this is regular movie files. I have never tried it directly from the capture as I just did, can't know if that'll ever have worked here.

It looks like to me the new video engine does a couple of things: one is that other outputs than QT's are supported.
The other is a thrust towards professional music for picture (following Nuendo).

This was Nuendo 8.1 giving me the same 'no go' as your Cubase 9.5. The video engine is the same, although a couple of cute things happen in N that aren't in C.

In your shoes I would see if Windows Movie Maker or whatever it's called now gives you a usable result.
if not:

yer in luck, it's freeware

Apple dropped Quicktime support for windows. That is wht Steinberg did a new video engine for Cubase.
If you are still using Quicktime for windows there may be securty issues.

that's right, they quit it altogether for Windows. Apple also kilt Quicktime 7 for OSX, meaning there is no way on earth to get QT Pro to happen if you don't have it installed prior to that. Which is :nutter:.

But evidently you're going to have to re-encode those jobbies. The only free way I would have is iMovie which is another of their apps they had to ruin, basically. Like iTunes, I used to use it all the time, now, hell to the no. That's the first time I've opened it on purpose this year, capturing that to see if the issue replicated.
