it sounds like you are singing into a fan, ever done that? its fun!
a little overboard with the highs giving the entire track an abrasive tone.
it might be me, but some verses sound a bit out of sync with the beat also.
good composition though.

Thanks for the feedback
yep I think the timing might be a bit out - have to fix that - will have a tweak of those other bits too - the vocal is through a granular effect - fan probably would have been easier

Yeah, the mix is a little shrill.
Maybe you sang to the instrumentally finished song. That might make it difficult to consentrate on putting the words cleanly on the beat where necessary. You could try recording the vocals to just the basic chords, the basic beat and the bass tracks.

OK I've had a crack at following your tips
The fan has been retired! I've retracked the vocals allowing for limited singing skills and tried to sort the harshness - reposted on soundcloud at same address
https://soundcloud.com/orgonetic/fears
Not sure its quite all worked yet - Thanks for all the advice though!

well from what im hearing from the very low recording level, the vox and sync is much better. However, this is one track where the weak production/mixing is really hurting its potential. if you can get the production end sorted out, it just might get the

Didn't hear the older version, so this is based solely on the latest one you posted. The overall volume level is low as pointed out. It's also generally just a bit dry and bland in terms of overall sound.
If your mixer tracks have a bunch of mixing FX - as opposed to utility and sound design FX - try turning them off and just level mixing everything (+panning) first. It sounds to me like a lot of the tracks are simply too quiet.
The song itself is solid, you're just not showcasing the full potential.

Thanks both for all your feedback - its been really great to get some practical tips!!
I have tried to apply it to the track and updated Soundcloud- although I think I might have reached the limit of my skills on this
Not sure if its improved or not but I think its slightly louder if nothing else !

Giving this another listen, I think it's better than the last version. But without a direct comparison, hard to tell what's changed.
I do think that there's one very easy win still waiting to happen:
Your chorus could really benefit from some background vocals/double tracking and a bit of (tempo-synced) delay on the vox here. I like your rather deadpan vocal delivery and I'd say it also fits the genre well. But that also means you need to give the vocals a little hand somewhere along the line to make it stick out just a bit more. If you thicken up the vocals in the chorus, I think you'll get a real "climax" effect. If you're got loads of vocal takes, you can normally just use some of the 2nd and 3rd tier takes for the backing vocals. Obviously you want the best takes for the main vocals.
Seeing as the song is good, it might also be worth putting this on the list of things to revisit in the future. 6-12 months down the line, you'll probably have learnt a lot more that you can then apply to your older tracks as well.

Reaching your limits is good though. It means you are pushing yourself and gaining knowledge. Practice makes perfect and all that!PaulB23 wrote:Although I think I might have reached the limit of my skills on thisNot sure if its improved or not but I think its slightly louder if nothing else !

What about mastering? Should help this track out of the abyss. The chiptune sounds in here are quite nice, though. More vocoder on the vocals could suit as well. Nicely done.
