I think about buying a better soundcard, maybe the EMU 0404 or some other in the <100€ class.
The thing I am not sure about is how to connect headphones to it. It does not have headphone out, but mono L/R 6,3mm (1/4").
Can I simply use an adapter cable for that or will this blast my ears, my headphone or anything?

Thanks in advance...

The two mono jacks are probably "line" level. You won't hear much if you connect a headphone to it (through an adapter.) The level is way too low for that.

I personally use a mixer for monitoring with only headphones. How 'bout connecting it to a (second hand) hifi amp with headphone connection?

Thank you!

I think I will go for a mixer, too.
The Behringer UB series looks interesting (and inexpensive).

Alternatively there's the E-MU 1820 which I own, and has a headphone out socket on the breakout box.

Problem with the 1820 is that it's not exactly in the sub €100 category. You can get a couple of 0404's plus a UB for that money.

Not sure weather that's very smart though... getting the pretty 24-bits converters ("same as ProTools" according to the adds) and hook it up to a Behringer UB mixer. Well, it will work!
