Ableton Automation looping

I've got a session midi clip for an external synth and ive added some automation to enable /disable a delay fx on certain motes. When I drag the clip to arrange and loop the clip the automation doesn't loop. Also the automation is no longer clip automation but now track automation. Is there a way around this to make it loop and preferably stay inside the clip? I'd like to avoid duplicating the clip if possible since that means further changes to clip need reduplicating.

hmm interesting. ya gotsta set automation from track view if in arrangement view. The clip automation drop box is 4 clip mode, bout Z only ting y'can contwol from clip iz pitch bend in arrangement
And all automation should loop if dragged but it'z common pwactice to hit record button, record your shit and zen go to arrangement screen

No solution that I am aware of. I am just used to copy and paste now, thankfully the region copy and paste in Ableton is rock solid. Sounds like your automation is not a pattern that Max midi tools could automate either.

Right, I got an answer elsewhere. Hopefully this will be of use to someone else..
Basically I need to use 'modulation', which I wasn't aware of. It's described here:
http://blog.dubspot.com/ableton-tutoria ... odulation/
I now have the following workflow which seems to work reasonably well.
- Record regular automation into session clip using my Komplete Kontrol Mk2.
- Copy newly record clip automation envelope
- If it's not already, place the device I'm automating into a rack
- Map the parameter that I automated to one of the Rack Macros
- Right click Macro and click 'Show Modulation'
- Paste the copied envelope into the clip's modulation envelope
- Delete original automation envelope
Now the automation has been converted into modulation, finally:
- Drag clip to arrange window and loop to taste.
It may seem a bit convoluted but it allows me to:
- record automation using hardware (modulation can only be drawn in)
- loop that automation along with the midi throughout my track using standard looping handle
- without duplicating clips or having an automation mess in the track.
- and I can manually tweak the automation in the one clip
- a nice side effect is that modulation is relative, not absolute so I can adjust the overall amount of automation using the macro control.
I would love it if the clip in the arrange window could be an alias to the session clip though

Just disable lock envelopes option, icon next to automation mode icon....
