Not sure what's going on here. The installation window is gone but the Bandlab assistant still says that Sonar is "installing". I chose to install the additional content, too, so maybe that's why it's taking a while?

EDIT: Nevermind, the assistant was stuck on saying "installing" but it had actually already installed.

It will certainly help the financially challenged and get a lot more people trying it, that's for sure.

Having said that, we all surely know the psychology of daw users, which in some cases kinda leans towards addiction. If price was the only factor, everyone would be using FLStudio and Reaper and never buy more expensive products. I mean, seriously, $60 every 3-4 years for Reaper or the FL lifetime license is very close to being free, but people still buy $500 Cubase and other things.

It will have some impact for certain, but maybe not as much as some imply.

It all comes down to the workflow. Sure I can buy FLStudio or Reaper because it is cheaper but if I'm not comfortable with the workflow in those applications then it is not worth it.

I ran into that about 5 years ago when development of my then-current host went kaput. I trialed and tested every host I could find and settled on one.. because it clicked with me.. the workflow, that is. My output was night/day different because the new hosts features paired with the workflow elevated what I could do.

Sonar may or may not be that for you or I.. even if it is free I wouldn't use a product that felt kludgey or was frustrating for me to use. I'm not here to fill up my hard drive with freebies, I'm here to make music..

pretty stoked. i love using Sonar for my linear needs, so i'm pretty confident i will enjoy Cakewalk by Bandlab as well

AVAST hammered it right off of my system, both the installed and the downloaded file, after tryin to install it. first time this happened to any legit audio-software, and i tested A LOT of daws.

Installed in a test machine out of curiosity. Haven't used Cakewalk for ages and was pleasantly surprised that the interface feels like it's still 1998. Uninstalled.

It's better looking than anything from 1998 lol, it's modular, configurable and I have to say, a lot clearer and better defined than Studio One 3.5 is, particularly the fonts...so first impressions gui wise, pretty surprised. One click full screen mode

At this point, I wouldn't install Cakewalk unless they paid me, or unless they fixed issues that were long-standing show-stoppers for me at the time I got off the Cakewalk Carousel. My time is valuable and "free stuff" often has a hidden cost.

(I really do hope Bandlab does some major overhauling and fixes that stuff, if applicable. That would be a pleasant surprise.)

Might have been mentioned already, but in Cakewalk it says...

My guess is that they after 6 months want us to pay for a subscription to keep Cakewalk running.
