For me, Adrian Belew brought something to Crimson that was sorely needed, well a couple of things, the drastically different approach to guitar and the melodic thing with his vocal prowess....

I like Belew's voice, and I liked some of his contributions to KC's music. But some of the pop songs on the album listed above were...difficult for me to listen to.

My favorite KC is still Starless and Bible Black and Red. Fracture is as good as it gets from my point of view. I like that Fripp is so much unlike every other guitarist. I find it....comorting, somehow. The closest thing to complete originality I can think of in a musician who was in any way connected to rock and roll, however distantly.

And speaking of guitar solos:

Unmusical drivel goes both ways. Compositional edge lords are no better than the tasteless wankers.

Conclusion: all music sucks, to somebody. Garbage A is garbage! I much prefer Garbage B.

I am tempted to disagree with you. Sadly, I don't know what a 'compositional edge lord' might be, so I can't in good conscious.

Could you give some names?

I have this weird picture in my head of a guy in a powdered wig and waistcoat sitting in a candlelit garret, furiously typing on the keyboard of a Commodore 64, mumbling incomprehensible curses under his breath

The Lords of the Length.

Don't see a difference, I make music as I perform it

Anti-virtuous is clearly an aspect of anti-intellectualism.
While I agree with this statement, there is also something to be said for taste and self-restraint. Playing as many notes as possible, as fast as possible, for as long as possible, might be satisfying for the virtuoso performer, but not necessarily so for the audience. Of course tastes vary, so I’m not speaking in absolutes. I tend not to enjoy that sort of thing, personally. But I’m not in favor of what I perceive to be the dumbing down of culture and society as a whole.
My reply is the same. I'm not against virtuosos. I'm just not interested in most of the performances associated with people labeled as virtuoso; at least when it's in rock or other more "pop potential" music. I'm more apt to enjoy it if it's classical composition and a violin/cello etc.

Someone mentioned Malmsteen... I've no interest in his stuff at all. Same for every other guitar virtuoso I've seen so far. That's taste. Not a proclamation of the skills being worthless.

I don't hate guitar solos. I'm just not interested in them being the majority of a song, and I'm generally not into the music style they are most often found in.

One of my favorite musicians stated being totally disinterested in guitar solos, and the guitar solo in one of his songs was created as a mockery of guitar solos until his cohorts said "that rocks"; so he included it in a song and I love it myself.

Taste is a hard subject to discuss because it's not objective. The taste of many people can come together in agreements on certain things, but it's never universal.

My disinterest in guitar soloists isn't a declaration that I hate their skills or that I think their skills are dismissable. They've put their lives into becoming expert at a task that I never will. I appreciate that effort. I simply don't enjoy the output, at least most times I've heard them.
