I thought it would be an interesting discussion for those who have been long acquainted with Sonar Platinum, regardless of the politics surrounding it to highlight aspects that are better from either program, now that they have had time to evaluate them both fairly.
What aspects do you miss, or think were / are better implemented...?

Pretty easy answer for me, the one that works with my Novation controller without hassle.
So, I have tried repeatedly to get my Novation sl to work with Cakewalk Bandlab without success. This is even though automap has a specific Sonar Platinum setup built in.
So I read this thread and fired up Studio One Artist ( never use it) and within a few minutes it is setup and working perfectly.
But, at the very least I think as a response to Sonar now being free Presonus could at least throw in VST support for the Artist version. Cut back on the tracks available, or come up with some other solution, but come on guys, no VST support is a joke.

Goodness, I have just visited the Studio One forums for the first time.
Only I could not not find any general discussions.
Even the one about migrating from Sonar to Studio One had no comments on Sonar now being free.
Did I go to the wrong place or is it really that dire ?

Why would they talk about it or even care?dellboy wrote:Even the one about migrating from Sonar to Studio One had no comments on Sonar now being free.

You probably have a point, but no one buys Studio One to join in the vibrant and jolly forum discussions do they ?Proteinshake wrote:Why would they talk about it or even care?dellboy wrote:Even the one about migrating from Sonar to Studio One had no comments on Sonar now being free.
Based on what I have seen there, I think I would go the Reaper route because at least there forum is alive.

Yep, I agree...It's the most lifeless and strictest forum of any DAW manufacturer.dellboy wrote:Goodness, I have just visited the Studio One forums for the first time.

Also, I have feeling it's pretty censored as well and who ever says anything against S1 is in trouble quickly.
Regarding "free Cakewalk" topic, I have a strange feeling that several topics has been deleted in last couple of days about this matter. I've seen several free Sonar topics when they were created and strangely they had disappear suddenly with just newest one left without an answer?!
There was huge number of Sonar refugees to S1, probably most than to any other DAW, (perhaps Cubase being 2nd) and strange thing is that nobody comments anything about Cakewalk?!
Also, no mentioning of S1 V4 leaked icon topic, nothing...
I understand it's support for S1 only, no general discussion and only registered S1 users can post there, even demo users has separate section for posting.
Strict rules, but I guess Presonus wants it like that. I really liked the times of old Presonus and old forums back in "pre V3 era" of S1 when they had different forums. Even Steinberg forums are more fun and relaxed now

My current list of possible DAWs to be the main or one and only DAW.
Studio One with ARA2
Reaper with ARA2
Would have liked to include FL Studio but they may never have ARA2
Sonar is out because the development is too uncertain.
MusikMesse starts on April 11. Will we then see the ARA2 details?

I'm actually looking forward to what both companies will have to offer.
I gave up thinking that one DAW will do it all.
The new Cakewalk by Bandlab going forward might be a winner with Meng at the helm.
Presonus has been growing by leaps and bounds with the hardware integration they have and I don't think that will stop.
I brought Samplitude and Studio One at great prices and I'm glad I did. Samplitude X3 does some things that Studio One and Sonar Platinum don't do. They all are tools, use the one for the job at hand

I switched from Sonar Platinum to Studio One and I really like Studio One. I've got tons of VSTs so effects and instruments aren't a problem. I love the audio engine and the workflow. I do have a lot of external hardware, particularly vintage synths (CZ5000, JX-3P, Novation, etc.), but how often do I use them any more? Not much, to be frank. I would like better step and midi capabilities but I can use FL and Samplitude for that.
It would take a lot to make me go back to Cakewalk. I'll sit and watch but I think my next move will be some Presonus hardware. I can't wait for V4.

The correct answer is Reaper. Has it already been mentioned?

Like I have said earlier,I was a Cakewalk user since Pro Audio 9 and I stopped at X3e when Gibson bought the company...
Sonar is a great DAW and I hope that the resurrection by Bandlab brings many positive developments...
These days I am using Reaper 5 and Studio One 3 Pro and I much prefer the workflow and efficiencies that these programs offer...
They are both great DAWs,but if I had to choose only one of them,it would be Reaper..
Once you get your head around Reaper's little idiosyncrasies,it's a real winner

You'd choose a DAW based on its forum activity? Hell, how can you ever get satisfied with a DAW which should fit your needs and requirements? I could even argue that more forum activity and discussion means that people have more need for help, thus meaning the DAW is less intuitive. I won't though, because, forums actually mean s***. And I'd never ever choose my DAW based on those.dellboy wrote:You probably have a point, but no one buys Studio One to join in the vibrant and jolly forum discussions do they ?Proteinshake wrote:Why would they talk about it or even care?dellboy wrote:Even the one about migrating from Sonar to Studio One had no comments on Sonar now being free.![]()
