One issue I am having is there doesn't seem to be much in JuceOPL that can be automated smoothly - everything seems to have discreet levels, even the carrier/modulation. Therefore putting movement in a pad seems limited to the built in envelopes?
Unfortunately as a result I've been resorting to automating the EQ parameter frequencies.

My entry, "Its Maario"
https://soundcloud.com/antti-luode/its-maario
It uses 12 instances of JuceOPLVSTi.
Some effectors as reverbs, a instance of delay and some limiters.
The FLstudio FLP file is at: (108 Its Mario.zip)

I think I'm at that point with my track where I need to take a beak for a little while.
Since I'm kind of at a crossroads I figured I'd post a work in progress. I could either double down on what I've got here or move in one of many directions. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as always.

Has somebody noticed the "hidden" switch?
Bedroomproducer Blog notes: JuceOPLVSTi is based on the algorithms used in two popular MS DOS emulators, DOSBox and ZDoom. The users can switch between the two emulators on the fly.
It's only available in the generic ifc in cubase. do the two emulation modes sound different?

I haven't noticed much difference in sound between the two algorithms.

Updated slightly. I made the sub quieter and added a Maximus to replace one of the Fruity Limiters on the master.

It's very tasty, I swear!

Some nice bass in there Peter - what else?? Also some nice distortions as well coaxed out of this wee synth!
I have had a re-think, moved away from the standard blues, and done a new WIP which I present here - the SC encoding has flattened all the dynamics, even with a WAV upload! So, I will have to work on this. Consequently the balance is all wrong - humph! Good job I checked this well before going too much further - but ... I'll fix it ... (you can download the WAV file if you are so inclined and have the bandwidth - 40 megs)
The "brass" hits part is a single instance of the synth, this will be separated out into 4 or 5 instances and each will be programmed better into the "range" for the "player". Poor at the moment ...
The reverb is many instances at the moment too, and will be consolidated later too.
Any comments and guidance welcomed - and that means "awful", "junk it" etc ... enjoy the ivories!

Nice tune there but it kind hides behind this distorted bass. I have tried to remove it in my mind or rather replace it with none distorted one and it sounds better. Don't know if it is on purpose but some of percussions here (especially hats) sound too 8bit? I mean compared to other instruments.] Peter:H [ wrote:Me WiP has been updated:

I'm too much in love with drums and percussion so these are first that hit my ears

Thanks DoctorBob - The synth is fun. I have tried my best to make it sound grown updoctorbob wrote:Some nice bass in there Peter - what else?? Also some nice distortions as well coaxed out of this wee synth!
You're right TrojakEW. Damn, I was so proud to squeeze these differente bass sounds out of JuceOPL. I have uploaded an update, but it's not really better. I'm so lazy to build a top notch snare from different layers that can compete with the snaresTrojakEW wrote:Nice tune there but it kind hides behind this distorted bass. My ears think, that the percussive snare does not connect to the rest like a brushed one would do.

Yes, that's the issue too for me ... both should be brushed or both hit. Given that to get a really really good hit hat with a nice fizzy metallic ring is not really possible without doing some sorcery,] Peter:H [ wrote:Nice! But - I want brushed snare playing please

Still loads to do, and it may still hit the bin

PS - I find that if you have percussions which have some white noise in them hitting the same space mix wise, I get a really awful interference (audio speaking) which makes them sound very bit crushed and sound awful. I tried to get round this by putting e.g. one hat far right and another far left then panned the left one back towards centre until the hat "sounded" like it was in the right place in the image! This meant that the snare "fizz" could be placed directly in the right place without directly interfering with the hat. Sort of works ...

Question -- as I read through the posts there is a theme of discussion re: how to use this synth to make realistic sounds -- drums, trumpets, pianos, etc... So this is a philosophical question -- would it not be better to dig into the sound making capabilities, strengths and weaknesses of the device, and just create sounds that utilize those characteristics? Rather than thinking in terms of "how do I make a trumpet", think in terms of "what does this software do that is unique, exciting and provides a creative launch point for composition?
Not knocking the desire to emulate real instruments, but thinking more philosophically as I age.....
Thanks!

It's much more of a challenge to coax particular sounds out of a synth that wasn't actually designed to even be able to create such patches. Doing so can show off the hidden strengths of a synth, that even the developer may not of even thought possible.ontrackp wrote:...would it not be better to dig into the sound making capabilities, strengths and weaknesses of the device, and just create sounds that utilize those characteristics?
That said.. I'm having to compromise a lot in terms of realism for the sounds I'm designing. Sort of embracing the classic 8-bit thing here and there, and blending them in as smoothly as possible.
Definitely learning a lot about bare bone, basic sound design on this one.
