I am having a problem transfering files via ethernet between 2 computers. The transfer rate is very slow! Maybe 45 minutes for 9megs. I'm transfering between a dell laptop and a mac. I know that the Dell is the culpret because when I transfer between another PC and the Mac the speeds are fine. The dell is 100speed and the ethernet hub is also. I think this started when I uninstalled norton (I'm not positive though). I've checked and changed various ethernet settings but nothing has changed. When I try to transfer the COL light on my ethernet hub blinks, I think this indicates an error...
I don't know if this will narrow anything down but also when I uninstalled norton, anytime I tried to use IE it will tell me I can't connect and would I like to try again, when I try again it works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Install the newest drivers for the dell's network card that you can find? Grab a new cable while you're at it. D'you have to use a hub, can you try a direct crossover cable?

Oh, and COL stands for Collision. Only one device can talk on the 'bus' at one time, and when something else tries to talk when a transfer is going on, you get a collision. You see this pretty often during normal operations.

Is the copying speed the same both ways, to AND from the Mac? Have you sat with your other PC, side by side to check your settings between the other one that's fine? What happens if you copy from that PC to the other PC that works fine with the Mac?

OK, If I copy to the mac from the pc it is fine.- the light on the hub blink real fast and no col light. But if I copy from the mac to the pc it's slow. - the col light blinks and the other lights blink very slow. I didn't mention that this is XP home ( I don't know if that matters)
I don't have the other pc anymore but, if I copied to or from the mac from that one it was fine. If I tried between the other pc and the dell I had the same problem. (The other pc was xp pro)

If it's fine one way, then set it up that way then.
Seriously, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would make it work one way fine and not the other on the PC side. Maybe a Mac problem because it originated when you start the copy ON the Mac itself? Least you have a work-around now.

<Mac ignorance>
Dont you have to use appletalk to network to a MAC?
</Mac ignorance>
if you get persistent collsions, it could be a dying network card. however this seems like something different.
I would try a Xover cable and see how that works. if it is still the same then try another NIC in both the mac and the Dell. Collisions are usually down to the hardware level and indicate that one of your cards arent playing nice.

Actually this doesn't fix the problem because I'm trying to send the files from the mac to the pc. I have the mac HD mounted on the pc desktop, if I drag pc files to it, it's fine but If I drag mac files from it it's not. I have the same problem if I mount the pc drive on the mac...DevonB wrote:If it's fine one way, then set it up that way then.Seriously, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would make it work one way fine and not the other on the PC side. I was watching the net utilization on the pc and it goes to 0.16% to 0 to 0.41% to 0% etc... I;m trying to copy 900megs not and it says 18hours.
Oh well thanks for the help!, I think I might install norton again and see what happens...

Can you mount the PC's hard drive on the Mac? Then drag files from the Mac onto the PC while you're on the Mac itself?
