Just as I thought. Talking smack as usual.BONES wrote:There is a big difference between "can't" and "doesn't lend itself readily to".Teksonik wrote:Please post an "aggressive" patch that Wasp can do and DUNE can't. I'd love to hear it.
It's clear you haven't even spent any time with DUNE 2. You should probably do so before talking smack about it. The third Osc in each of DUNE 2's layers can have either Saw, Square, Triangle or Sine waves not just noise.BONES wrote:But when it is being simple it can't sound as good as those synths. e.g. I can't have three oscillators without diving into the Differential Unison Engine in DUNE (unless one of them is noise, of course)What's truly ridiculous is anyone being so baffled or intimidated by a few extra GUI elements that they would not use a great synth like DUNE 2 because it's "too complex" even though can be just as simple as Wasp or KHS One.
You're just contradicting yourself. You don't do layers and you don't like complex synths but you think those sounds can magically appear using a single simple synth. Try making some of the sounds D2 can make with a single instance of KHS One. Can't happen no matter how much imaginary skill one possesses.BONES wrote:Of course, what baffles me is that anyone thinks they need something as complicated as DUNE in order to make complex sounds.
Said the guy who after two years still can't wrap his head around DUNE 2 and is intimidated by a few extra GUI elements.BONES wrote:a lack of programming skill and/or technical understanding.
Yes they do..... they use Wasp.BONES wrote:I don't think they use softsynths at all.One could easily turn the tables and say....Simple things amuse simple minds....
Anyway use whatever you like. If you're intimidated by complex synths then leave them to those who can think beyond simple sounds. That's the great thing about simple synths like KHS One. They're perfect for beginners.

You forget that I use Photoshop for a living. My dick pics would be extremely impressive, both in terms of length and girth (and, of course, anatomically impossible).
Why? I don't need any of that stuff. You don't build complexity by layering the same part over and over, you build it by layering different parts and/or by automating parameters and/or using your sends creatively and/or a dozen other things. The LFO in Orion's piano roll is like 1,000 extra LFOs in any instrument, for example, and it has the advantage of doing it's thing no matter what sound you throw into it. Again, it's about being focused on making songs, not on making sounds.Teksonik wrote:You're just contradicting yourself. Hey, you don't get to use your original diss as a comeback for my comeback. That's unoriginal and might even be considered cheating.Said the guy who after two years still can't wrap his head around DUNE 2 and is intimidated by a few extra GUI elements.
Whooooshhhh! (The sound of that comment flying over your head.)Yes they do..... they use Wasp.BONES wrote:I don't think they use softsynths at all.One could easily turn the tables and say....Simple things amuse simple minds....
How about I keep ignoring anything you have to say until you've had an album in a proper chart for a month or two, like our last one was?Anyway use whatever you like. If you're intimidated by complex synths then leave them to those who can think beyond simple sounds. That's the great thing about simple synths like KHS One. They're perfect for beginners.

I don't get the whole Dune 2/One debate at all. They're two completely different synths with two completely different sounds. I mean if there were any two synths that I could absolutely tell the difference between, it's these two. Not saying one is better than the other. All that's subjective crap anyway. I like the way Dune 2 sounds. For me, it is truly unique in its character. Maybe that's because of all the layers. I don't know. I'm not a tech wiz. I just know what I like. And Dune 2 is one of the first synths I turn to when I do an EDM track. In fact, I used a factory preset for this song's arp and just tweaked it a little to get the two different patches (one for minor and one for major). In fact, the patch itself was the inspiration for the whole song. So I don't get the whole Dune 2 is for sound designers nonsense.

KHs One, on the other hand, when demoing it, was just another synth. There was nothing special about it. Owning over 100 VSTs, I just couldn't see myself spending money on something that any number of my other synths could do. Maybe as a first purchase I'd be pleased with it. But at this stage, ONE does absolutely nothing for me while Dune 2 still inspires me. And it must inspire other people too because it's my 10th best selling library, not that that surprises me because I think it's one of the most unique sounding synths out there in a world of "me too" synths that get quite tiresome after a while.
Is it my personal favorite synth? No, but I'm sure it's somewhere in the top 10. But again, that's just personal preference and everybody's is different. But to compare these two synths, IMO, is ridiculous. Apples and chain saws.

It started because I said I'd rather fire up One than DUNE 2 and that remains the case. But it's equally true that I'd rather pass a kidney stone than listen to the kind of music in that Soundcloud file. i.e. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for everyone else. Yes, DUNE is perfect for those bright, bouncy, but at the same time dense, sounds but I have no use at all for anything that sounds even remotely like that.
My band-mate uses DUNE a bit so it's something I have to deal with regularly and that's where I get frustrated with it. He'll just grab a preset and I'll have to take it and make it work for the overall tone I'm trying to achieve and it's a complete PITA for that kind of work. Mostly I end up replacing it with something else, although we've done a couple of things recently where, with the right kind and amount of distortion, it works well enough to keep. But I could never imagine it being one of my "go to" synths, whereas One ticks a lot of those boxes - good (hard) sound, lots of useful features and every function/feature visible at all times (no tabs or buttons to show/hide things).
Just to go even further OT, if I had to nominate just one synth as my go-to, it would be Novation V-Station, hands down. That thing is just mean and it loves to scream it's head off. I'd forgotten about it for years until we moved to 64 bit and had to leave a lot of old stuff behind. It's been able to replace so much of that stuff and often I can do it better without any of the insert effects I'd needed previously. I just love it!

Isn't it abandonware (officially)?
Don't KH concentrate on this Phase Plant thing?

Kilohearts here: Yeah, don't expect any actual updates. This version number thing was just so confusing we had to deal with it.

I like One as well for its simplicity. Phas Plant (although I love it) is kind of overkill sometimes. I just keep wanting to make the patch more complicated all the time.... (which says more about me than Phase Plant)e-crooner wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2020 3:50 pm Kind of a pity, I like the limited scope of One, Phase Plant is too much and a strange concept for a synth...
