I mean, how do I do a search within the registry to follow kp's advice?

... once youre in regedit theres the usual 'find' option under the edit menu ...

IF I was you I wouldn't do this until I'd checked it out with these people first:

you can bet someone will have come across this and discussed it there already and maybe they have already identified solutions. Most of these toolbars and browser hijacks don't just mess with the registry; they often leave backups etc dotted around the system and attempts to cut them out piecemeal can lead to worse problems.

They also have a number of free tools (such as Hijackthis and CWShredder) available for download from their site you can use to help pinpoint exactly where changes have been made to your system and eliminate them - better than blindly hacking through the registry.

ad aware took care of it all
then I switched to mozilla

It can be used to remove Browser Helper Objects (ie. unwanted toolbars).

Thanks for all the suggestions.

AVG has detected some viruses, but strangely, it can't move the files to the virus vault, and I can't actually find the files in the specified folder. Supposedly there are 2 exe files in WINNT\Downloaded Program Files, but even though I've changed folder settings to view hidden files I can't find these, and neither does a search. Yet AVG consistently finds them, and Zonealarm has blocked them accessing the internet and confirms the location.

took me forever to remove it by myself off my roommates computer. she finally agreed to buy a firewall and virus scanner.

when i ran ad aware it detected and deleted the crap from my registry without me having to muck around in there

I think I've gotten rid of it now, but AVG is still detecting mysterious virus .exe files that I can't actually find.
