Depends on the DAW really but still. With the price of Serum you get FLS. Or 10 versions of Reaper.

With the price of 2 "higher end" vst synths you get Reason.

So how is it.. Are vst's overpriced or DAWs underpriced?

Possibly, Reaper and other cheap DAWs have put a downward pressure on other DAW prices. On the Mac, it's hard to compete with Logic, or even Garageband, which has been used to record and mix CDs (or so I've read). But I don't really know.

Some VIs are certainly overpriced. I kinda regret buying a couple of things like the VSL special eds.

And some DAWs are overpriced, like Nuendo

Ever since getting into Eurorack, I feel like software in general is cheap.

Not so sure about that either. Of course I understand that coding can be hard work and takes alot of man hours to make a synth. Especially making a DAW. And those man hours are the thing why I think that DAWs compared to vsti's are cheap

Seems like hardware is also soon cheaper than vsti's

There ain't no such thing as a market price, never has been, even on old oriental markets vendors would give the same thing for very different prices.
The mass is the key in software. If you can sell more than ten times as much for 1/10th of the price you better sell it for low. And have some extras for a high price for those who have more money than they need...

It's a matter of sales figure. There are many times less DAWs on the market, so they sell in larger quantities and are much more profitable.

yup, few quid shy of 3k in a week
i haven't spent anywhere near that on software over nearly 20 years

I agree.

That said, i find DAW's to be pretty cheap as well though. Especially when you consider how much a hardware studio would cost you.

IMO, VSTi's should be priced 129 €, max. I usually buy on sales, don't think i ever paid full price for a 100 € plus VSTi.

Reaper is not cheap. People might think it is cheap because most people consider themselves non-pros and thus opt for the discounted hobbyist license so to speak.
The regular Reaper license is $225.

with everything that is included in the package, I think Ableton Suite version is a total steal - instruments, drums, MAX, efx, samples
just an insane amount of toys to play with

I agree. Especially as it doesn't come with any content at all, opposed to about any other DAW i know. At the very least, i don't think it is more value for money than other DAW's, when you do this as a profession.

Then again, Reaper major versions last pretty long, so one doesn't have to upgrade for years.

But for anyone who makes less than $20000 annually from music, which is probably most of us, it is significantly cheaper. A hobbyist, or small time library music composer, can be in business for $60. And if you really do make more than that from music, $225 is quite cheap compared to something like Pro Tools ($600 or $2500 for "pro pro tools") or Cubase (~$500) And while it doesn't come with content (besides a couple hundred plugins

) it does have a thriving community that releases scripts, extensions, themes, and other content on a daily basis (many of which take it far beyond the capabilities intended by the developers), almost all for free. (For example, with the Reaticulate extension, someone basically added a clever and elegant interpretation Cubase's expression maps to Reaper, and it's free)

DAWs are cheap.
