I just purchased the ST2 Free upgrade that comes with 8 discs full of sounds, but there's no directions on how to gain authorization to use the sounds....no instructions that I could find. I have sent a message to support, but I was hoping for an easy answer if that's possible...otherwise, I'll wait for them to respond.

ST2 FREE upgrade? What ST2 FREE upgrade? There isn't one.
There IS an ST2 XL upgrade from ST1 LE,SE,DJ,L or XL and there's also a new upgrade qualifier that is ST2 LE. So, in order to be able to use an upgrade you have to have owned any ST library with an LE or any of the version 1 SampleTank products OR any Digidesign ProTools system in order to be able to register the upgrade.
If I am interpreting that you purchased the upgrade thinking that the FREE version qualified for the upgrade then you will have trouble registering the upgrade because it does not qualify for an upgrade discount. If this is the case, then the remedy is to just buy ANY ST2 library such as the Expansion Tank series or Sonik Capsule series (each of those has sounds + ST2 LE which WILL qualify you for the discounted upgrade and allow it to be registered). It's going backwards but the way it works is that the system recognizes that you are registered for the qualifying product and then it allows you to register for the upgrade version of ST2 XL.
The other option is to get the full version (non-upgrade version). But, ironically, the price difference is at least as much as getting an Expansion Tank or Sonik Capsule title anyway (think about it guys
). So, again, if this IS the case then you might as well take advantage of fixing it this way and have yourself another library.

I think you have, Im afraid. I suspect this is an upgrade of sounds for those who were entitled a free upgrade to the SampleTank2 engine from SampleTank1 (or something else, possibly) as a download
