Which Audio Editor?

I've tried Wavelab which is an excellent audio editor but it has a lot of features I might never use or that are duplicated in other software I own.

Please give me some advice on what audio editors are out there. I'm looking for:

1. Low(ish) price.

2. Batch editing of tracks ripped from the sample CD's I own (the software should be able to automatically cut up and loop the sounds contained in the track.)

3. Editing and looping wav files (automatic looping options if possible - crossfade, matching loop points etc.)

4. Mastering features.

5. VST/DX support.

6. Format conversion (wav, mp3 etc.)

7. Automatic acidising or beatslicing of wave samples (I can dream can't I?)

These are just some of the features I would like. My main use would be to batch rip, chop and loop wav samples to use in Ableton Live 4. And to master my finished songs.

I know some of you here are experts in using audio editors so I'd like to benefit from your advice. Thanks!

I was going to suggest Acoustica, but that doesn't have batch-editing. Goldwave does, I think.
I like Acoustica's DX-support a bit better.

I like Acoustica but I think it's a bit unstable on my system right now (might be the otherwise fine system's fault, what do I know).

I noticed it will get very shaky after detecting DX-plugins. Version 3.1 (out now) should deal with this.
Otherwise, no problems here (XP 2400+, ASUS A7N8X-E DeLuxe, WinXP Pro).

well, goldwave and acoustica both seem to be great audio editor (just like SoundFOrge but very cheaper),
but the problem is that they are only Dx, and not Vst at all...
what kind of audioeditor would accept vst plugins (whitout wrapping them !), cheaper than adobe audition, and better than audacity ???

is there any VST & DX audio editor ??

I don't think Acoustica deals with loop points..
(if I'm wrong, someone please tell me how!)

..but its worth the price of entry just for the noise reduction: anyone recording with a condenser mic in the same room as their PC should check it out IMO..

some places in the UK (eg. Turnkey) were selling Wavelab Essentials for around £69... pretty much the full Wavelab but without the montage view etc.

Do a search on "Waveknife" which is free.

I'm using WaveLab, but Zero-X seamless looper is said to be a great tool for such things.

I'd say this depends on the plugins you own...

Hm, not sure, but I think Audacity is now supporting VST plugins.

Again Audacity (at least partially) and dbpoweramp (free too).

Wouldn't happen to know of a wave editor doing such things.

And btw, WaveLab Essentials doesn't have the loop finding/adjusting mode.

Have a look at CM Muzys included on the cover CD on Computer Magazine. It's a sequencer but includes a very competent wave editor including beat recognision and saving to sepatate files, reads mp3, VST (but not DX) etc. CM cost like $10 so I think it's kind of a bargain. Can't handle lager files that you have RAM though...
