Hi there,

I thought about buying Nexus 2 what seems to be a kind of a bad deal with €250 in 2018.
But, nonetheless, I love two things about that thing:
1) Pianos (especially the Dancepiano 2k7)!
2) I could really think about using Nexus2 as a starting point for my productions, or just layering.

Should I buy it or are there any alternatives in your opinion?

Cheers!

Well, if what you get for 250 is enough for you, than sure, if you are going on expansions buying spree, than think about it more.

Which DAW do you use and what kind of music you do?

Be aware that this is a rompler and not a synthesizer.

F9 Piano is pretty neat and sets you back just around 30 pounds.

Korg M1 : 50 dollars

I would get something that can do more than what is possible with a Rompler, maybe something like Electra2 ($149), Avenger ($220) ANA 2 ($135) or the Synthmaster Everything Bundle (on sale now for $227).

Thanks for your answers!

I already have a lot of stuff in my arsenal, even FL Studio's own synths are great ones.
Music-wise I am very open but I like that Nexus' presets seem to be a good starting point, especially for synthesized sounds of all kinds.

be aware you can sell nexus only complete (with all the expansions you bought) and only if the devs wants it. that may be hard once you own some expansions and want to get rid of nexus. be also aware that many presets sound the same. it also uses an elicenser copy protection.

you may demo it before. i experienced nexus a great thing for beginners but after 2 or 3 projects i already missed flexibility and "everything" i made using it sounded the same.

if you already own many stuff you'll gain nothing since the nexus sounds itself got sampled from other synths. there are more open synths like the ones mentioned earlier that offer dozens of soundbanks too and they are tweakable.

So you basically want Nexus for "place holder" sounds, it's really up to you if you can justify it.

Did you tried Xpand2? I got it for free, snoop around, maybe there's some 1$ deal, that could be nice place holder rompler.

I think Avenger fits the bill - not as quite of a sophisticated sampler as nexus, but happens to be one of the most advanced synths on the market. Packs are EDM oriented and well made, perfect for searching for that starting point.

Nexus isn't sampler tho...

It contains a sampling engine within it, same as Avenger, which is what I meant.

Wait till pluginboutique will have Hybrid 3 and Xpand 2 sale (you can grab each for 1 usd on some occasions)

Also if you need pianos Sampletank 3 free has really good one.

With all your recommendations to alternatives and complaints about being not flexible enough, you often forget what Nexus is meant to be...

It´s sounds are mostly production ready, which is really a lot of work and for less experienced users not easy to achieve...

It´s sounds are already processed, with tons of layering, which to "recreate" in a similar quality takes you days of work (if you know what you do) and tons of CPU where you have to bounce down most of the sounds and loose any flexibility of any used synth anyway...
This work is already done in Nexus´s patches, it´s ready to play at very low CPU consumption and that is what you pay for...

The delivered quality is outstanding for that type of music it is made for and there is nothing really nothing for the EDM market that delivers this ready made kind of patches out of the box other than Nexus

Avenger, even though it´s very capable, isn´t meant to be an alternative to Nexus... because of it´s flexibility and big feature set, it´s far too CPU hungry as you could use tons of layered sounds in realtime in a project... This is "Nexus´ land"!!!

About the suggestions here:
Nexus: production working horse, which has (for EDM) no competitor out of the box
Avenger: Power house for everything special (depending on the types of sounds can be used more often in a project as well though)

Air products: quite nice especially for that price but need really to dig in, process layering etc... good as pure soundsource but not really more...

Electra and A.N.A 2: very good synths, but again, to let the sounds play in the same ballpark as Nexus, a sampler would be needed (for all the non synthetic sounds Nexus offers and are included in the layering to reach this kind of sounds) and tons of work to find the right sounds for layering, processing etc...

A competitor for Nexus could be Omnisphere, if they could get a good sounddesigner, who knows what he does for EDM music... but anyway, because of their limited 2 layer design, would be quite CPU intense as well... and not really cheap neither

Is Nexus expensive?
Yes it is... it´s a money making machine for the devs because of it´s closed design...
But it is really worth every penny for those who can afford it without whining if it cannot be sold the easy way next day again...
It´s not the poor man´s synth... it´s for people who understand, that if you hire experts to do some work for you, you have to pay for it...

Just my 0.02$

Cut out and keep Trancit's post above. That's as definitive explanation of Nexus2 vs Everything Else as I've ever seen.

If you need "synthesized sounds of all kinds", especially "production-ready" presets suitable for pop/EDM and the like, and also dance pianos and other workstation-kind sample based stuff you may check out Parawave Rapid. It's in the same price range as Nexus but it contains an actual wavetable-based synth engine which means that you will be able to modify all the presets and make your own stuff. It's also pretty moderate on CPU and contains some multisamples or real insturments in addition to the wavetables. Overall I think it's much more bang for the buck than the basic Nexus package.
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try
