Has anyone else been following the peculiar events on the CM forum this past week?

First there was a thread entitled: "Is CM aimed at warez users"? (which was soon edited to remove the controversial parts), then another called:

"Steal": http://forum.midiaddict.com/viewtopic.php?t=46748

which criticised Computer Music for putting:

"Classic loops and breaks: How to STEAL them, make them and use them in your music".

on the cover of their latest edition.

Personally, I think it was a lot of fuss about nothing.

More serious was the comment made by another poster in the thread who pointed out that a letter in the new CM's "Message Centre" was a blatant encouragement to dishonesty. The correspondent complained about the rared samples on CM's cover CDs because he didn't own a copy of Winrar.

Instead of recommending one of the many freeware programs that can decompress rars, CM advised the writer to dodge the shareware program's € 29,95 registration fee by "using the wholly sufficient trial version" which, like Winzip, is not time or feature-limited and relies on the users honesty to register the program.

Then, this morning, a post was made in the "General Conversation" forum claiming that CM's special edition of SpinAudio SpinEQ has just been released on "warez" boards by a pirate software group.

While deploring this act of piracy, the poster pointed out that CM was hardly in a position to complain, having themselves advised their readers to dodge Winrar's registraton fee by using the unlimited demo version to unrar the samples on their cover CDs.

When I read the forum this evening, the entire thread had been deleted. Obviously CM had no adequate reply to make.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the matter, my feeling is that CM make themselves look even worse by deleting threads willy-nilly and censoring all discussion of an issue that is of concern to many people.

They should either admit they got it wrong or defend and explain their bizzare advice.

I don't read the CM forum very often, so have no idea what their policies are, but I'd guess, much like KVR, that discussion of warez is not allowed.

No. A quick search shows endless threads about warez and cracks.

The only threads that get deleted are the the ones that criticise CM's double-standards on this subject.

I just got my CM 78, always takes a while 'til it comes to Germany. All that what you mentioned can be read in mag 78, I think. And it's pretty strange anyone would complain CM was in any way supporting privacy or something

The mag has a very interesting pages about sampling for PRIVATE use. It's clearly mentioned in the mag that if you go and search your fine CDs and LPs for samples, you CAN do this as long as you use it strictly private or "for research purpose".
Then, interesting enough, they write about people in music-history of the last decades who went to court because of taking uncleared samples and so on. Main theme of the article which I find VERY good is how to sample... how to take samples you like for, err, research

. No piracy whatever is intended. Okay, on the cover you read "how to steal them" (sample like the stars). It's nonsense saying CM would lead you to steal samples...

The RAR-person

as far as I remember complained in a letter that samples (free, not stolen ones

) were packed in RAR-form. CM answered -rightly - that way they could pack MORE on their CD. That's all. Winrar is free for 40 days, I think, and I think too there are programmes that can read rar-files and are free??? That I don't know, but all that fuzz was rather strange, and even if I'm not working for CM or even know the sister of the Editor

I just can tell you, in my view there's NOTHING CM has done wrong.
But the CM-instruments and plugs that come with the mag are fine, and so are the patches Totc has done for those instruments

I understand a bit that CM would delete obvious nonsense, whereas (I did not read there at the forum) they could have made some comments on the obviously wrong accusations too, maybe that would be even better, sure.

What's wrong with using the demo version of WinRAR to open rar's? It doesn't offer the full functionality of the full program. It wouldn't be available if the dev had a problem with this. This just sounds like moralising to me. There's no obligation to buy anything and CM doesn't have to promote buying one program over another unless it get's paid for it. There's no such thing as free advertising.

I don't read at the forum, so you'll know more. In the mag itself there's no double-standards at all. They even wrote many sites about piracy, in CM 67 or so last year, and many many programmers had short statements there, if I remember right people from Linplug, FXpansion, Jorgen Aase, rgcaudio(?) and more. I would definitely agree to the new mag: if I take 3 seconds of Mogwai or whatever for my private fun it's the same as listening to the music, keeping in mind those 3 seconds and playing them with a bass, a guitar, a VSTi. Nobody can say "hey brain forget that 3 seconds!" is it? But nobody at CM says you might steal and publish your stolen thingies in a song.
In Germany a now well-known band (err, in Germany, for Germans: "Die fantastischen Vier") once, unknown, seem to have stolen some seconds. A man called Diedrich Diedrichsen who wrote in a elitist poshy magazine ("Spex") found that out and they had to go to the court and lost. Well, they were unknown, had no money, tried it out, everyone sampled at that time. Diedrichsen made it public. I'm not so sure who is bad here...even if they clearly stole some work of others. But anyone at CM would tell you you might face the court if you do so. And those thoughts are in the world, as long as samplers are there, not since mag 78 of CM, is it? At least that's my opinion.

I agree, sampling other people's music is commonplace. CM have always stressed that it is important to declare any samples. They've written articles on it. So I don't really understand where the idea comes from that they have double standards about this issue.

Sounds like crap to me. I've been reading CM for years, barely missed an issue, and they always clearly state that they won't accept music with uncleared samples, to always do things the legal way etc.

To say they encourage copyright theft is like saying they encourage you to pirate a copy of reason if they do a tutorial on its use.

They provide instruction, if the reader choose to breach the law its their personal decision. Sampling commercial tracks, for your own learning purposes, seems fine. If anyone wanted to release a track using these methods, its up to them if they choose to seek clearance first.

And whatever goes on with CM....am I mistaken or isn't it CM's forum? So if you slag someone off on their own forum, they have no right to edit and/or delete? I think if you posted a thread here all about how Ben is a beerswilling ugly gutbucket...you might find he'll edit it or delete it, no?

If you don't like CM, then post elsewhere about how you don't like them..................errrrrrr, I see you already did.

But don't expect them to put up with being slagged on their own forum.
