There's a few dozen different variations for the Voxengo plugs that can load colour themes.

Waves SSL Compressor seems to be $29 at least one time by year and it's very good.

No contest, Kotelnikov is unbeatable because of its feedback nature (where the threshold "rides" the signal, making it more suitable for more dynamic signals, like a mix with loud and soft parts), and for being able to meter off of crest factor (the difference between peak and RMS) rather than merely metering off of peak or RMS, which along with separate release controls for peak/RMS makes it very suitable for complex signals.

It also has a built-in adjustable HP filter on the side-chain which is indispensable for bass music, so your bass won't make the compressor choke the track as much.

That said, while it's the best free compressor for higher-up in the mix, it doesn't belong on the beginner forum. Never use a more complex compressor "just because," work your way up to it when you learn audio enough to see why a tool like Kotelnikov might be necessary.

Red Phatt Pro (redness not pictured) is a remarkable compressor, it's the other compressor that I can't believe is free, and it's more suitable to beginners. It'd rate it a bit above Melda.

It also features filtering on the side-chain, it's capable of of all four vectors of compression (upwards/downwards compression/expansion), it has a Hysteresis function which adds "tension" to the detection signal, which reduces unsubtle pumping artifacts and makes it suitable for more complex signals.

Don't plan to become mixing engineer - Melda and Kotelnikov are OK,not sure which one will be 'better' in term of color or transparency in different situations, but to me both give good results, also i like REA compressor and cubase default comp - i guess every instrument need specific kind of compression to shine, along with eq and other fx stuff which make mixing a science :)Cheerz :)
