I don't know how nForce chipsets perform in the professional audio realm.
The Nforce2's run perfectly well, and I can run a DMX6Fire at 3ms on an XP2500. There's a problem with this guy's system, but its not the spec thats an issue; its either configuration or something not working problem.
I've read many times that VIA chipsets should be avoided if working with pro soundcards.
Yeah, because three or four years ago, there were known issues with VIA chipsets, and people keep repeating that as though its something current. It isnt...
Intel chipsets seems the most stable.
There have been issues with Intel chpisets as well. The point is, though, that companies build to Intel chipsets, and test to them. Hence they're most likely to be compatible.
The problem seems to be that some chipset manufacturers cut corners to make the computer respond more to things like AGP - as games are a big part of the PC industry. This sometimes leads to audio being pushed aside in the priorities that the chips make when shuffeling data between the components inside the computer - causing glitches, cracks and possibly even high CPU load.
This sounds apocryphal to me, to be honest.
Try to find posts at forums (using google) for your motherboard and soundcards.
As a combination, yes, but it would be kind of surprising the Nforce2 is a fairly well-established chipset by now. If there's a known problem, though, Googling is sensible.

to add to what rabbit said, the particular via chipset that had audio issues was the KT133. This was soon replaced by the KT133a which solved those problems. This chipset is at least 4 years old, and there have not been any problems since that one model.
Intel chipsets *may* be more reliable, however you would be hard pressed to find one that works with an athlon...

It should be a perfectly decent system to run heavy processing on. I'd consider 1GB RAM rather than 512, but there's no point in spending on a new CPU. 2.7GHz is plenty fast enough unless you absolutely insist on never rendering anything to audio (which is just plain dumb anyway). PCs play lots of audio easily - use it.
Yep, reverbs can eat CPU - one reverb should be enough for most tracks, two at most. Use short reverbs for most purposes, until you are ready to commit to audio.
Have you got Plugin Delay Compensation working? You really absolutely don't need 5mS latency for making your average trance music - it is most often pattern based, using audio loops and/or midi loops. I haven't come across anyone who has to play live keyboards to make successful trance yet. Lower your latency, you don't need 5mS. (toggle it back up only at the times when you do intend to play into your host live...then toggle it back afterwards). Almost every host sold nowadays will compensate for audio playback, and midi VSTis and FX. I don't see how your timing goes off with increased latency unless you have disabled pdc, or have something terribly wrong in your setup.
I generally have my latency set at 20mS, but I don't even need it at that. I used to have it at 50mSecs and not have the slightest problem when mixing and using audio and midi.

I am currently using Reverb on EACH one of the VSTi's Seperately.
And each audio track.
I am not using sends? As I dont know how to do that (Yes I have the manual and im one of those people who skip the manual lol).
So say 10 tracks minimum with a reverb effect on each, and a delay on one or two of them also...
Is this the problem?

Yes, you can safely say this is your problem.

no need for that at all.
RTFM. You really need to learn how to use send FX. Save your inserts mainly for Eq, dynamics and gating. Almost all other FX can be used as sends. The benefit is you need far less FX loaded, your mixes will probably sound more coherent, and your PC won't barf all the time.

you could easily get away with probably 2 reverbs on you sends, that will save you tons of CPU. An athlon 2700 should give you a fair amount of plugins and polyphony. when you run out its time to freeze, and make sure you are using your software as efficiently as possible.

Holy Toledo! Reverbs are some of the most CPU-hungry plugins there are, especially high quality ones. Combine that count of 'em with some high-end VSTi and you could bring a supercomputer to it's knees!DETECT2 wrote:Hey

Yup, Reverb's chew up horsepower. I use shitloads of them, sometimes several on a track, but I bounce tracks to disc when Im happy with them.... if you really need those reverbs, you could try doing the same thing.

Or invest in a PoCo or a UAD1. The entry models are fairly cheap nowadays, sure beats buying a new computer. 2.7 GHz is more than enough for tarnce...
