You play the sound with two notes?
Maybe I was overthinking trying to achieve the pitch change within the sound itself.
Would you mind to share the wave and the Serum preset?
I also want to share my results but as at the moment it is not that good, I want to wait until I can achieve a better sound.
I tried to draw the wave in Serum too but I was not succesfull and the pre-made graphic tools did not help me either, at the end I found it easier to draw in Audacity.
It would be great to know the mathematical formula for use in Serum but this formula feature is too complicated for me!

I am really very impressed!
The idea to simplify the drawing of the wave is brilliant and fits perfectly to the 8-bit concept of the whole thing.
It is also very easy to directly draw the wave in Serum
After setting the polyphony to two voices I could reproduce almost exactly your sound (with one voice the sounds becomes too steppy).
Now this search for the Waka Sound has almost reached its end for me.
I will still try to adapt it to Avenger and probably try a sequence/arp or a pitch enveloppe but your result is already perfect in my view.
I must say I have learned quite a lot during this search and it was fun

Attached to this thread is a zip with the preset for Avenger.
It uses a simple Arp using the notes provided by Chapelle.
For the sake of completeness I also added in the zip the waka wave that I draw in Serum according Chapelles instructions and exported from Serum, it should be the same as the one provided by Chapelle.
I must add that Chapelle did a very good work not only with the simplified wave drawing but also with the choice of notes for the sequence/arp!
At the end it looks so easy but one has to find the right path

I forgot that the preset I made in Avenger depends on the Arp speed!
As I made the preset the tempo of the project was set at 300 BPM!
It means that the preset will only work at tempo 300 which is really not a good solution
I will try to find a way to make the "sequence" speed independent from the project tempo or lastly use a mod enveloppe for pitch.
Of course using a midi sequence is always possible and is possibly the way it has been originally done.
EDIT 2
After some tweaking I found out that though it is possible to achieve the pitch changing with a mod enveloppe for the pitch, it sounds much better with the arpeggio (or a midi sequence).
Therefore I suggest that if using the Avenger Arpeggio it is necessary to adjust the pattern speed in Avenger according the tempo.
Here some suggestions:
Tempo - pat. speed
60 - 1/128T
80 - 1/256D
100 - 1/128
120 - 1/64T
150 - 1/128D
180 - 1/64 - 1/128D
200 - 1/64

Here is the easy solution. You just need to draw it in LFO, and drag and drop, same as you automate knobs/wheels, but into the wavetable (alt + click).

There's a NI massive preset that is almost identical to that sound but with another sound layered over it. I used it one time to make a Trap beat for a project. I cannot think of the name of it now though.
Listening to the arcade game now I would think you could get very close with PWM and a low pass into a sample rate reduction algorithm and then modulate the PW and the pitch slightly with a triangle LFO.
