What's a good host to chop up midi files?

I use cubase sx2 and have just got a mpc2000 for live sequencing. so i would like to transfere the midi sequences from cubase to the mpc. Unfortunatly cubase can't export individual sections to midi, only the entire sequence (there was a short post about this the other day, i did search for it but couldn't find it).

Are there any free midi editors that can do this?

Sonar is getting to be pretty good for this as they are implimenting a lot of nice features for loop based music. I use it to make loops for my XL-7. One of the European magazines had an article on this a few months ago and it seems like Sonar 4 listed another improvement in this area. But Sonar 3 works well for me.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Thanks robert! i like the look of sonar, it seems a little more innovative with its midi implantation. (might go have a look at the demo, see if that can imort/export midi)

VAM,

Yes, Sonar can import and export midi (type 1 and 0)...I've done 3,000+ drumbeats with it. It is excellent for midi as it has all kinds of built in routines to manipulate the midi data, add feel to grooves, etc.

so what if you like the host you've got already and you just want a vst to mangle midi files and whatnot what would you good folks suggest?

logic fun! :D believe it exports as 0 or 1, hs lods of midi features.

True, Logic Fun will export individual selections as MIDI files.
On the SX side of things: It's INCREDIBLY lame they don't offer such an option! Their programmers deserve all sorts of kicks in their fat'n'lazy butts to finally bring such an option back (I think in VST you could even drag MIDI "clips" straight from your arrange to explorer or wherever).

So far the solution in SX is to save your song, delete anything but the files you want to export, then export and go back to the previously saved version, then repeat those steps until you exported everything you were after.

Btw, LogicFun/Windows is still available on Emagic's site. Just look at the Education section.

cool, Thanks Sascha and xoxos! I'll go have a look for logic fun now.

I've done the save and delete everything else before but i don't need to say that it is a little frustrating.

Won't be that much less frustrating in Logic Fun, to be honest.
I mean, you can't exactly work in Logic Fun, so you'd need to export the complete MIDI file, import to Logic Fun and then extract each file separately.
I don't think that in the end this will be less time consuming.
