  • Hey All,

What do you all think of the new Reason Drum Kits - Refill?

How do you all think it would compare to DKFH any version and BFD?

It seems it might be easier to work with then any of the other 2 programs.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

I have no opinion pro or con of that ReFill per say as I don't own it.The audio demos did sound good, though. On the other hand,I think the Sonic Reality stuff sounds better, and if you're an esoundz member, those ReFills cost a third of what the Props are charging(isn't it $129?),$50 if not.Quite a difference.

Another good option but for not-so-natural yet very useful drum sounds is the new ReFill Hollow Sun Classic Instruments by my company,Dangerous Bear Underground. It contains NNXT and ReDrum patches based on samples of classic drum machines from the highly regarded Hollow Sun website. This ReFill is the first time that the entire library has been available on cd and in Reason format, and is well worth it for the synths, organs and other vintage sounds as well as the beatboxes. You can read about it here:

Depending on how much ram you have,if it's realism you're after, the very popular and excellent Natural Studio kit is available in SF2,so you can use it in NNXT.Also, the wav files for that kit are available so you can make your own NNXT patches and ReDrum kits from them.

Anyway, there's lots of useful drum resources for Reason, and the new Propellerheads drum ReFill is certainly a viable option from the sound of the mp3's.But you should look at some alternatives in the price performance dimension first.Good hunting.

tee boy,

To answer you directly, what you get is the unique NNXT patches,ReDrum kits, rex loops and rns files for effects and modulation routings that I created from the samples.Plus the time taken to translate all of the Hollow Sun presets into NNXT,which cannot load .akp files, and tweak them to work well in that sampler. And there will be more rex loops and rns files in the follow-on companion ReFill Hollow Sun Classic Beatbox, coming in October, and which is focused totally on the drum content. The current ReFill does have all the drum sounds, though.

Then there's convenience. One of the reasons that Steve and I tought that this would be a viable thing to do is that there is a value to getting it all at once, and in a variety of formats, with the assembly work done for the user(I will also be releasing the library in SF2 and VSampler.Maybe more, depending on demand and what other samplers I will be getting). As of August, the cutoff point for this collection, the library was in excess of 400 megabytes. That's a lot of downloading even with broadband.I did almost all of it with dialup, and it took me hours a day for months(not working every day) to get it all.The fact that you don't have to download the library instrument by instrument, then translate it,but get it on cd as a refill has a value in itself for the time saved. Then you get the original Dangerous Bear patches and drum kits,so you're getting not only my labor but my creativity.

Also,a royalty is paid to Hollow Sun for every ReFill sold,so this is also a way to give back to Steve for putting such a great library out there for free for so long.I think he deserves to get something out of his effort.

On a personal note, while the Hollow Sun products are the flagship of the line, there's more to this enterprise than that.I am doing Dangerous Bear Underground because I love sampling and synth programming.I've been doing recording sessions for an all-new,all original drum library that I hope to get out by the end of the year. This will include drum hit samples and live performed beatloops. And there's more on the drawing board. Some of the stuff will be free, some commercial.I just want to put out the best sounds I can,and charge, when I do charge,a fair price for my effort and for my imagination's output.

I hope that this answers your question. It is certainly a fair one,and I am happy to have had the opportunity to expound on it.
