The problem, as I'm sure you're aware, is that midi mappings are entirely worthless. Out of the 128 midi parameters you can have on a given panel, only two will be worth a damn: the pitch bend and the mod wheel. Normal CC is a waste of time, you can't do shit with 128 coarse values and you might as well use your mouse.
The bean counters at NI really hurt the VST scene when they stupidly killed the Kore project for no reason whatsoever. The problem that OP has isn't something that anyone at all would have at this point, normally.

it is about what you like to play. it all comes down to why you do it. it’s about what you appreciate. hardware doesn’t have to deal with cpu restriction (very inspiring!), software is mobile and cheap. for me, the biggest killer of software are the preset makers. when everyone has the same instruments playing the same presets making the same tracks it kills inspiration. you no longer feel inspired and lose your appreciation. that’s why guys/gals like hardware. they can maintain their inspiration because there are no presets. UNLESS ITS A ROMPLER OF COURSE! which just goes back to what do you want to do? how do you want to do it? it’s about feeling inspired.

Very interesting approach @Dasheesh apart from some flaws in just about all your premises:
1. It doesn’t follow that people who use the same presets on the same instruments make the same music more than novelists who use the same language, letters and words write the same novels.
2. FYI a good deal of hardware, if not most of it apart from some reissues of vintage gear and modern modular systems, do actually have presets. Did you own your last hardware synth in 1978?
3. To this day I must say that I have never heard someone claiming their love for hardware is based on the fact it has no presets, which would also be a strange claim given point 2. above.
But the thing about feeling inspired I can follow just fine

It's exactly the same for me.. I ain't ashamed to admit it either..gaf_thit wrote:I've been collecting more and more gear over the years, and now suddenly I've started feeling like using VSTis are not as 'real'.
I love using plugins, both instruments and fx, but for some reason I feel it is less authentic or some bs like that. Can't put my finger on it and the beers doesn't help on my aim.
Anyone else feels this way and can somebody please set me straight? It's so silly...

I missed this response, but I have only one reply. there are only 12 notes LoL. people do make the same movies and write the same novels over and over again. they just upgrade the software at this point.IncarnateX wrote:Very interesting approach @Dasheesh apart from some flaws in just about all your premises:

Hmm, I guess everyone who has ever used a midi CC value is going to be distraught that CC is a waste of time and that it couldn't do sh%t lol. Somebody needs to get in touch with Herbie Hancock and let him know lol.acYm wrote:The problem, as I'm sure you're aware, is that midi mappings are entirely worthless. Silliness aside ... I really do think taking the time to map midi knobs to the controls of software synths make them more pleasurable to use and helps with creativity in the same way that using a hardware synth does. It takes time, you have to sit and decide what controls you want to be mapped where for whatever you are doing, but I think even that helps you to focus on what you are doing in the moment. Instead of 100 controls staring you in the face, you're making the same kinds of decisions you'd make with .. for example, a modular synth, .. what modules do you want to hook together, what knobs do you want to tweak ... mapping midi, especially if you are mapping knobs on multiple synths at the same time, is kind of like fidgeting with modules, knobs, cables, etc, in a modular synth. By making decisions about what you're going to pass CC data to you're limiting your choices and focusing in on a few things that you can play with to get something interesting. I'm probably weird because I really like mapping midi controls and tweaking the presets, etc, I think it's fun and interesting.

the only way I stay inspired is by separating myself from what everyone else is doing and from what is currently popular. it’s the only way I feel any ownership or discovery anymore. just X everyone because you’ve already seen and heard what they have to offer. only thing they can’t offer that you can is YOU. your voice comes through. it comes through to your peers and it travels through time. it is the only thing that outlasts your body. only hardware users that use presets are trance and edm producers.

you know what I hear when I hear that drake album? I hear “ice ice baby.” i hear “you can’t touch this.” how about salt and pepper “push it”. it’s just a different generation but the same formula. 25 years from now these 20 year olds will be like “remember that drake jam? that one summer”. “what year was that?” blah blah blah... it all starts to blur together after 45 years of living. believe me.

I want to sound good. I think sounding like yourself comes naturally, with the selection of sounds or "a sound" which you like and prefer. More or less any artist has a unique sound IMO.
