Hello all! I'm new on the forums but not new to the site.

I'm building my apartment studio and looking for a good-sized & affordable music desk. I'm not wood crafty, therefore I'm looking for a desk that's already constructed.

Why is it that companies who make music/recording studio desks charge so much for them? At least that's my opinion. They never seem to cater to the affordable home studio market, only commercial.

I'd like to have an OmniRax CODA or ProStation Jr. desk but they're over $650, which shipping nearly $200 because of weight. I've also looked at those by Quik-Lok, M-Rack, E-Desk, Middle Atlantic, RaXXcess and others that were out of my price range or awkward/small in design.

I'm checking out the Studio RTA Producer’s Station. This one is $500 which I feel is still $100-$150 too much. I also wish they made them in all black.

I'd like to know, what music desk do you use and do you know of any worth looking at in the $300-$350 range?

cement blocks a door and some creative decoration/construction along with a nice sheet and good lighting

That makes a kick ass desk if you are creative enough... and you're a musician, you oughta be creative enough!

I bought a very nice LARGE L shaped desk from Office Depot for $150 that works perfectly.

I use a Z-Line Eclipse Mobile Computer Workstation I got from Staples for $149 (last I looked, though, it was under $100)...fits my needs perfectly.

nice rig there, do my eyes deceive me or do i see an effectron delay in your rack? i LOVE that box to death, had that same one at my school, it belonged to my teacher and he offered to sell it to me but i had no money at the time... wish i could've bought it... perhaps i'll start scouring ebay

I've added another two top shelfs and two extra side shelf for my speakers. A perfect way to have everything in a very small space.

A problem with most specialised desks are the limited space for extra video screens. Just get a standard office desk.

I'm using two 6-foot folding tables pushed together into an L shape. I attached a keyboard/mouse tray underneath one of them. Eventually I plan to replace this arrangement with my own custom built desk. For me, the problem with all the pre-built music desks is that they aren't long enough. I have a lot of tabletop gear, and two 6-foot tables really isn't even enough surface area for all of it.

Omnirax and the others are designed with compactness in mind.

The standard office desks from Office Depot, etc. are usually too small as well, and poorly constructed. They seem very weak, and I can't imagine them holding up a monitor, PCR-80, heavy-duty keyboard tray, a pair of Mackie HR824s, Oberheim 2-voice, MS-20, Nord Modular, FR777, Octapad II, Theremax, turntable, DR202, ER1, MOTO828MkII, KPR77, PC1600, and various other small bits of gear!

And mind you, I'm only talking about some of my tabletop gear...

...No, a custom solution is the only answer. I will probably build a corner desk about 7 feet long on one side and 6 on the other, There will be a deep shelf above and rack space in the base on one side, and on the other, shorter shelf-type risers for the Mackies while still allowing more gear underneath. If I can put enough rackmount gear underneath, hopefully I can get rid of one of my other racks and free up a bit of space in my rather cramped studio (I have two 7-foot tall racks, originally used for networking equipment).
