Softube Tape, Reelbus, Ozone Vintage Tape and Ferric for me. I'm keen to check out the Klevgrand DAW Cassette too at some stage.

+1 for Goodhertz Wow Control if you want to do some wild tape distortions and want that sound of a tape machine that seems like it's on the verge of breaking down.

Haven't tried Softube's, but used to use Roundtone before VTM came out, and VTM actually sounds like Tape. Roundtone sounds like something else, which is not to say it doesn't have it's uses sometimes.
I tried some of the Nebula ones also but they weren't very good compared to VTM, at the time.

Softube Tape -- I hate it, maybe it's just my ears, but I basically can't even *hear* it. Seems like pure placebo to me. All the others I have, well, I can HEAR them, so they immediately rank higher than softube.
SATIN -- probably my favorite. surprised it's not mentioned more in this thread. I love it. Subtle, but wonderful.
Waves -- I have both Kramer and the other one, forget it's name. Bought them for 29 bucks....I never use them, because they didn't sound as good as Satin to me. They're ok. They're not Satin.
Worth Noting: I started using Soundtoys SIE-Q plugin a lot lately, and the effect of the "drive" knob on it is very similar to using the above saturation effects, and in many cases, I like it even more. And when you add in the warm bass boost and smooth high-end boost Sie-Q can also give, it's seriously useful and effective....I'm turning to it more and more when I want that warm vintage goodness to push a plugin synth into non-plugin-sound territory.

Softube Tape take a bit more pushing to drive than most, crank the input in the hidden section and you will hear it clearly, no placebo.

Virsyn VTAPE is pretty good... or at least is used to be. Now I can never seem to get their plugins to work.

There's no placebo going on with Softube Tape - the transient softening, saturation, "headbump" etc etc are all real. At stock setting without pushing it, it's very subtle... "mastering grade" you could say. Some of the other tape emus are really made to impart character from the get-go but the Softube one is very tasteful. Real "studio" tape with clean heads doesn't have a dramatic effect anyway. If you're wanting some kind of grungey lofi cassette type special effect, it may not be the first choice.. but it can do that too.

Softube Tape I use more for polish than an obvious drive (and no its not placebo). I have lots of other tools I use for drive before and after using tape (in the signal chain).s28 wrote:mholloway wrote:Softube Tape -- I hate it, maybe it's just my ears, but I basically can't even *hear* it. I have VTM, but I don't use it. I'm not a fan of it.
I do like Wow Control from Goodhertz. I do not use this in the same way I use Softube's Tape mostly because it does so much more with phase options and doubling and coloring. There are just so many nice tricks built into Wow control.
Softube's Tape has some additional options but they are subtle except for the nice Tape Stop feature, which is pretty nice for when you want/need that kind of thing.
I did just upgrade to the Abbey Road Collection (after swearing off all Wave plugs) and that has the J37 Tape, but I have not loaded it up yet.

Hidden section, you say? Hmmm.... I'll load it up tonight, it's quite possible I completely overlooked something. Thanks for the heads up.
