Well it's 1969 OK all across the USA
It's another year for me and you
Another year with nothing to do
Last year I was 21 I didn't have a lot of fun
And now I'm gonna be 22 I say oh my and a boo-hoo
Heh, back in those days it was 18 (which really meant about 15 in most parts of the country). By the time you were 21 it was pretty much old hat.

95. Money, so they say, is the root of all evil today.

Pink Floyd. Yeah. Lots of memorable ones from them.

It just occurred to me that, strictly in terms of the song format, I remember lyrics more so than music. But once I remember the lyrics I tend to remember the melody (not harmony) for those lyrics. It doesn't seem to be the other way around, most of the time.

Without doing a Google search, I am almost sure science can prove that lyrics, to the average person, are easier to remember than music.

But. Wordless music and riffs can be memorable too. Like the theme from Jaws and Star Wars. And some classical music riffs (Beethoven's 5th and 9th). And song-wise, the riff from Smoke On The Water, etc.

What do you guys remember more? Lyrics or music?

Boy, thanks for hesitating
This is the kiss off
Boy, thanks for hesitating
You'll never know the real story
Just a couple of dreams
You get up and sleep
You can buy god, it's Monday
Slither down the greasy pipe
So far so good no one saw you
Hobble over any freeway
You will be like your dreams tonight
You get up and sleep
You get up and sleep
Joe the lion
Made of iron

Joe the lion went to the bar
A couple of drinks on the house an' he was
A fortune teller he said
"Nail me to my car and I'll tell you who you are"
Joe the lion, yeah yeah
Went to the bar, yeah yeah
A couple of dreams and he was
A fortune teller he said
"Nail me to my car tell you who you are"

You get up and sleep
The wind blows on your cheek
The day laughs in your face
Guess you'll buy a gun
You'll buy it secondhand
You'll get up and sleep

There was a moon and a street lamp
I didn't know I drank such a lot
'Till I pissed a tequila-anaconda
The full length of the parking lot!
- Joni Mitchell - 'Talk To Me'

-----------------------------------------

I'm traveling in some vehicle
i'm sitting in some cafe
a defector from the petty wars
that shell shock love away
there's comfort in melancholy
when there's no need to explain
it's just as natural as the weather
in this moody sky today
in our possessive coupling
so much could not be expressed
so now i'm returning to myself
these things that you and i suppressed
i see something of myself in everyone
just at this moment of the world
as snow gathers like bolts of lace
waltzing on a ballroom girl
You know it never has been easy
whether you do or you do not resign
whether you travel the breadth of extremities
or stick to some straighter line
now here's a man and a woman sitting on a rock
they're either going to thaw out or freeze
listen...
strains of benny goodman
coming thru' the snow and the pinewood trees
i'm porous with travel fever
but you know i'm so glad to be on my own
still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger
can set up trembling in my bones
i know - no one's going to show me everything
we all come and go unknown
each so deep and superficial
between the forceps and the stone
Well i looked at the granite markers
those tribute to finality - to eternity
and then i looked at myself here
chicken scratching for my immortality
in the church they light the candles
and the wax rolls down like tears
there's the hope and the hopelessness
i've witnessed thirty years
we're only particles of change i know, i know
orbiting around the sun
but how can i have that point of view
when i'm always bound and tied to someone
white flags of winter chimneys
waving truce against the moon
in the mirrors of a modern bank
>from the window of a hotel room
I'm traveling in some vehicle
i'm sitting in some cafe
a defector from the petty wars
until love sucks me back that way

A sore loser
Yelling with my mouth shut
- Faith No More - 'A Small Victory'

--------------------------

Back and forth, I sway with the wind
Resolution slips away again
Right through my fingers, back into my heart
Where it's out of reach and it's in the dark
Sometimes I think I'm blind
Or I may be just paralyzed
Because the plot thickens every day
And the pieces of my puzzle keep crumblin' away
But I know, there's a picture beneath
Indecision clouds my vision
No one listens...
Because I'm somewhere in between
My love and my agony
You see, I'm somewhere in between
My life is falling to pieces
Somebody put me together
Layin' face down on the ground
My fingers in my ears to block the sound
My eyes shut tight to avoid the sight
Anticipating the end, losing the will to fight
Droplets of "yes" and "no"
In an ocean of "maybe"
From the bottom, it looks like a steep incline
From the top, another downhill slope of mine
But I know, the equilibrium's there
Indecision clouds my vision
No one listens
Because I'm somewhere in between
My love and my agony
You see, I'm somewhere in between
My life is falling to pieces
Somebody put me together
- Faith No More - Falling to pieces'

---------------------

A shiny copper penny
And he spent himself
Would not listen to us
But when he lost his appetite
He lost his weight and friends
- Faith No More - 'Everything's Ruined'

--------------------

Backside melts into a sofa
My world, my TV, and my food
Besides listening to my belly gurgle
Ain't much else to do
Yeah, I sweat a lot
Pants fall down every time I bend over
And my feet itch
Yeah-I married a scarecrow
I hate you
Talking to myself
Everybody's starin' at me
I'm only bleedin'
Someone taps me on the shoulder every 5 minutes
Nobody speaks English anymore
Would anybody tell me I was gettin' stupider?
I hate you
Talking to myself
You don't feel it after awhile
You take the beating
I'm a swingin' guy
Throw a belt over the shower curtain rod
And swing - - -
Toss me inside a Hefty
And put me in the ground
A drink needs me
I don't
I ain't about to guzzle no tears
so kiss my ass
newscasters, cockroaches, and desserts
I hate you
Talkin' to myself
Everybody's starin' at me
I'm only bleedin'

And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time
Far past the frozen leaves
The haunted frightened trees
Out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow
“The Generals sat, and the lines on the map, moved from side to side.”

Faith No More - RV (Released 1992)
Paul Westerberg - MamaDaddyDid (Released 1996)

Shucks, I was hoping Paul Westerberg released his song earlier than 1992.
Still, maybe he has never heard of RV by Faith No More.

Decided not to have any part of
Wonderful lie of (live) love
Decided not to raise any children
Just like mamama and daddy did
Just like mamama daddy did

Decided not to have any part of
Wonderful lie of (live) love
Decided not to raise some goddamned kid
Decided not to have any part of
Wonderful lie of (live) love
Decided not to raise some goddamned kid

Yes that was their way no it ain't mine
Guess they did ok at least they tried

Decided not to have any regrets
Whoa that's as good as it gets
Decided not to raise some mixed-up kid
Just like mamama daddy did

More from Paul:

I stay in every night of the week
They try but I won`t speak
To be my friends
You`ll see me once I`m on the mend
Oh man once around the weekend
Oh man once around the weekend
I watch myself fall apart
I watch the rabbits in my yard
There goes another round the bend
I gotta sweep this floor again
Well I won`t go out to relax
And if you look hard you might see my tracks
They call and try and be my friends
I gotta sweep this floor again
Oh man
Oh man

Last one from Paul:

Big hands on a clock
Little hands covered in chalk
Red lines blue lines
Sometimes sometimes
Angels walk

Giant steps take two
Tiny eyes in a shoe
Make bows of halos
And take those wings off
Angels walk

Fly beside me
Hold my breath
Deep inside me
I'll meet you round the block
Sometimes next time angels walk
Angels walk

Will you people please stop jumping under my train

Cop Shoot Cop did have some incredibly funny, if similarly dark, lyrics.

Life is so much better when you're dead
Conversation's easy when there's nothing to be said
But it can get a little lonesome
Maybe you should take along a friend
Like I said
When you're dead
Everybody Loves You When You're Dead

Well you're the new joke
From the old school
Think you're a big shit
'Round the cesspool
You're just a whirlpool
In the mainstream
Think you're a big shot
On the drug scene
You're just an oil slick
On the dragstrip
You're just a skidmark
On the speedway
Eggs for Rib

When it's 4:30 in the morning
And the vacuum sucks you in
The tell tale trace of guilt upon your face
The sidewalk feels just like your skin

When your heart is full of winter
And your days become like living in a lie
And the clouds outside your bedroom windowpane
Resemble crippled children limping slowly 'cross the sky

When you grasp at straws like forgotten songs
And your memory's short but the days are too long
Every dream that you bought seems to slip right through your hands
Well, love has got disorders, and work has got demands

Bob Dylan, "Positively 4th Street"

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

The whole song is great, but that last line is a brilliantly simple burn.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.
