Lite versions are the savior of my wallet. Either they'll come with hardware, or in the case of Reason, from friends who don't want them. Still run Ableton as my core DAW, but when I'm feeling flirty I can give a good portion of other DAWs a whirl. Surprisingly helpful to my workflow, which, unfortunately for my bank account, seems to benefit from having a good selection of things to experiment with.

Does REAPER 0.999 count? I tried that and Podium Free. I'm kind of used to REAPER 0.999 in terms of doing simple songs. That's all I want to do anyways, simple songs. Just because I have 20,000 midi drum patterns to use it doesn't mean my songs are not simple.

I haven't tried Traction 7. I tried to download it but it was kind of a hassle, same with Cakewalk Bandlab Sonar.

I don't like to connect my computer to the internet (my main music-making computer, the Windows 7 one).

I think both Tracktion 7 and Cakewalk Bandlab Sonar required internet connection.

I am aware that I am not obligated to buy REAPER just because the 60-day trial period expired. But I can't ignore my gratitude. I want to buy it.

Now that I know it takes REAPER 4 minutes to load 20,000 MIDI files and another 4 minutes to open up the MIDI Editor and about 2 minutes to batch edit 20,000 MIDI items and another 2 minutes to batch export 20,000 MIDI items, totaling about 12 minutes to do the whole thing... I am thinking of generating another 80,000 MIDI drum patterns. Or till my duplicate MIDI item finder keeps finding duplicates 100 percent of the time. Hahahaha. I'm serious.

This is not off topic, right? What I am describing above is the result of demoing REAPER for 60 days.

Only one I really regret is Reaper, although it was only $50. Thats one .5 update of Cubase

Only other DAW I used before Cubase was Bitwig but I sold it.

Nowhere does it state that 32 bit has been discontinued. Nowhere in any promo material does it say that 32 bit is no longer developed. Also, the devs should be ashamed of how buggy not only the first release is, but how bad it still is. I'll stick with Cubase 8.5. Handles both bit types, and has far more functionality.

Don't think I've wasted money buying any DAW. Switched around a bit and still have copies of Reason, ReNoise, Logic, DP, Reaper, and Live.

Though I thought I was going to get back into using Logic for VCA faders, older songs in Logic etc. but ended up finally getting over some of the initial humps learning Reaper and am at this point convinced it's going to end up my main DAW.

Renoise I've never made friends with, but I don't really regret buying it....

My first Daw, Nuendo lasted me 14 yrs, quite a good demo period, in past few months moved to Reaper as it has 32 bridge.
Checking the update price from N2 to newest seemed silly, NGK or wehaterver it was an additional cost

Not too much. i started with a pirated copy of Cool Edit Pro McGyver'd together with Ableton Live 4 Lite then to Ardour, no money spent there (except for the controller Live Lite came with). Then Logic Express, updated to Logic Pro when Express was no longer a thing. Got a couple albums of material out of that setup, and now don't really use my license anymore. The last time i fired up Logic i got frustrated and promptly deleted it off my hard drive.

Since 2014 it's been pretty much just been Ableton Live and then ReWiring into Reaper whenever i get frustrated at Ableton's CPU and PDC performance. i've made pretty good use of my DAW purchases, really.

If mastering programs count, Triumph was an infuriating waste of money.

Do you not have an internet connection ?

Reaper will require one to download the program, although it is not many megabytes.

Tracktion and Sonar will obviously need an internet connection to download and authorize, but after doing that the internet can be permanently disconnected.
