Electro-pop??
When I started listening to Mr.Jarre, the musical style was rather talked about as "new age", possibly ambient, even though I don't know if ambient music was recognized as a musical style back then, I mean by name.
First time I hear someone claiming Jean-Michel Jarre to be electro-pop, unless you mean that Jarre probably has influenced a lot of electro-pop artists of later years.

Happy birthday! I can't stand most of his music, it's just a little bit too much on the cheesy side for my taste, but he also has some tracks I absolutely love.

SO FUNNY ... I literally had Oxygene going through my head when I saw this post, but since I don't know HOW the song got in my head, could it be because I subconsciously perceived the thread title BEFORE I consciously perceived it a few minutes later ? lol.

That's how I remember it ... the music was brand new then, unlike anything I had heard before, so I don't remember it having a genre. When I bought Oxygene and Equinox it was on tape, and sold at a fair as a kind of new age meditation music, next to the beads, candles, and the rest of it. In fact, his performances were marketed the same way, as a kind of head trip, or a psychedelic experience, and I don't remember anyone talking about his music as a form of entertainment.starflakeprj wrote:When I started listening to Mr.Jarre, the musical style was rather talked about as "new age", possibly ambient, even though I don't know if ambient music was recognized as a musical style back then, I mean by name.

Electronica is, even though it's a much wider term, more suitable to use I guessChris-S wrote:My local newspaper used this term....starflakeprj wrote:Electro-pop??![]()
Nowadays most people would call it electronica maybe.
Maybe electro-pop could be applied to the track "Téo and Téa" by Jean-Michel Jarre?

Worth noting, his music was similar to some other music that was going on ... for example, Yes's "Tales from Topographic Oceans" had a very similar vibe to it, with arguably a similar semi-religious experience type goal.

That's exactly how i would specify his music. It surely isn't "Ambient". New Age, perhaps. New Age is such a watered down term, that it could literally mean anything.Chris-S wrote:The godfather of electro-pop

Old Age music.
If he was a dog, he would be approximately 490 in human years.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

The band Space was also from that time and country, and made similar music.
