Cubase 9.5 Default Directory

Does anyone know of a switch in Cubase to have it assume that all default locations you're going to use are in the same directory as the project you're working on.
I'm so sick of doing a mixdown, or saving a file, or opening a file, or importing, or anything related to a file location, and having it default to some location I used previously that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the track I'm currently working on. Is it that freaking hard to assume that if I just opened a project and I'm exporting the mix down to disk that I might NOT want it in the location of the LAST project I was working on ? And, you know ... maybe I want it in the directory of the project I'm currently working on ...

EDIT: sorry, I should answer your basic question first. I don't know of any way to change the behavior of the Export Audio dialog, where you determine the path you want. While it creates an Audio directory per the project, in the project folder, there is a choice to be made. I could look it up for you in the manual but I don't expect success and I'm sort of beat. This may be stuff you totally have sussed but here's a thorough walk-through anyway. I get what you want and I remember experiencing that frustration. But here it is:
It works the same as it ever did. If you export audio it will do it to the last directory established for the render*.
For example: I export a finished piece to "Cubase/Audio" while I export audio I'm using in project to Project Name/Audio. If after I've done the former, & the finished piece isn't so much finished, or I'm doing a new project I have to re-establish that the render lands in Project Name/Audio.
It's about user control. There is no default like that *if you have told it to begin with you wish to set it up yourself. EG: on Mac the default for Cubase if one is not proactive at this step is "Music", where iTunes and other applications reside by default. If you have not changed this, the default is going to be in Music/Cubase/Audio.
Once you have established that you want to control it yourself - which means each time - you control it yourself for the life of this installation.

IF this isn't true, you have corruption somewhere and need to trash preferences if not re-install.
In case what I wrote is not immediately apparent:
For instance, by Preferences, I choose not to use "Hub" for setup. I have no particular need to, so it's simply command/O for open with no visual except the toolbar. Or I could tell it I always want most recent project opened.
With Hub enabled for setup, however, you'll see this at the bottom:
EDIT = Sorry, incomplete info: the business end of this choice is Path, in the Export Audio dialog. So, forget about the defaults, that's just an explanation of a basic thing; you have total control from this simple selection. Also it can land in the pool ticking that and inserted in project.
Additionally there is a space to set 'Pool Folder', I think you have to type the full path; I never cared about this bit.

Thanks jancivil, I looked through the documentation and found some of those settings too, but my use has been different in that I like to keep everything about a project in a project folder, including the mixdown, but now I see how you are doing it and I understand more why it is doing it the way that it is. To me it's just annoying to have to change 3 or more paths every time I change to a new project when all I want is for everything to go to the same project directory that I'm working in. I get that it's the "users choice", but my choice would be a "use the project directory as the default path for everything the user saves" preference option.

Yeah, that's how I thought of it at one time. All you really have to do is determine Path, and that's going to be it until you change path. At the top of the Pool you see Project Folder and below that Pool Folder and I remember thinking why the hell isn't this automatic. In a project I want two directories, Audio within project name folder, and a folder, Audio in my Cubendo highest directory, for final product. And I forget fairly frequently where I am.

The reason I like saving audio to the project directory is because my focus was less on having all audio in one directory so I could enjoy it (or for whatever reason) and more so I could go into a project directory, play an audio file, and quickly remember what that project file was about without having to load it back into the daw.jancivil wrote:Yeah, that's how I thought of it at one time.
