Now that is truly elegant. I'm very impressed.

Thanks for sharing that preset!

Thanks. No problem. :)

After some good advice from NicFit, see this thread:

http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56843

I have created a new, streamlined default file.

Image

To understand the drum group read this:
NicFit wrote:Now for a "Group" track...load an instance of EnergyXTE(the fx version) into your sequencer....but not as an "insert" or "send"...load it as an output for a track like an instrument....(then un-route the track from it) ...now for all your Battery outputs that are connected to the Sequencers "Master out#", route those channels to the EnergyXTE plugin you just loaded as an instrument, and remove the Battery channels original routing. Inside the EnergyXTE plugin you could just route the Master in direct to the Master out ....or put any FX in between if you like. Now click on the EnergyXTE plugin name in your Sequencer Mixer and rename it "DrumGroup" Wink
This set up is less cpu hungry than my last setup. I'm taking NicFit's advice and I am going to make better use of the horizontal mixers in the sequencer.

Hi all,

GrooveMaker

This is the project file I use to extract drum grooves from loops and frankenstein them into midi drum loops for later use and abuse.

The XT Sampler is the slicer.
Load up your drum loop into the sampler and slice and dice.
Use the SMF button to dump your midi groove into a folder of your choice.

To make things easy for me, I have folders set up in my Master Browser specfically for this purpose. It means less rummaging about looking for the folders you've used.

Now one midi part is the source and is connected to the sampler.

Drag n drop the new midi file into the midi part (Source).

This is so that you can play back the original sliced loop at any time for A-B comparisons.

Drag n Drop the groove also into the other midi part (Destination) which will be connected to whatever drum source you're using: another XT Sampler, Sampletank, VSampler, Drumatic, whatever.... just replace the Audio Part there as a placeholder.

Now you can play the source midi part in a cycle while moving around the part in the destination to line up the groove with the right drum samples.

I prefer to use GM mapping for this personally as it's a standard that will help me understand and easily adjust the loop to whatever sample source mapping I use in my song projects.

One thing to notice is that a slicer will very rarely work successfully on hats as hit points are difficult to make out. I'm sorry but this usually means creating the hats parts by ear.

Once you've got the loop that you want simple save the midi file to your chosen destination folder and there you have it.

Link to project file: HERE

Feel free to do what you want with this project to make it more useful to you.

Hi all,

SoundDesigner

Just sharing another idea.
When I'm doing sound design sometimes I like the idea of some notes to loop continuously while I tweak.

The project file can be found HERE
The purpose of the project is very simple. The sampler comp in the project file is there only as a placeholder. This is where you'd stick the VSTi.

A midi-part feeds into the plug-in you're working on and I've got some basic midi parts covering chords, lead melody, arpeggiated lines, pad notes, drum hits, basslines etc...

Of course you add what the hell you want to these and they are not supposed to be great melodies or anything. Change 'em, quickly transpose them if you're designing for a higher sound than the note that is playing....whatever.

You can also use your midi keyboard to trigger the midi parts if you want to. All parts are set to Note on/off at the moment but you could just as easily have them set to toggle.

And the good thing is that because this is eXT you can use this project in eXT host if you want to just design a whole set of new patches on a VSTi.

Or you can use this on an eXT plug-in within a song project when you're trying to design a patch for a song. Then when you're done you can save the patch and reload it into the VSTi in the song project.

I intend to use this project myself, but I'm posting it just in case it helps anyone else with their sound designing.

OK - for my next trick....

GrooveBuilder

This is a project file that is used to rapidly build drum grooves when working on songs. This is particularly useful for a percussion dumb arse like me.

Actually I haven't really used it yet so we'll see.

The project can be used in standalone or as a plug-in, but you'd use it slightly differently depending on which one.

The idea of it is that you build up a library of simple drum component midi files. 4 crotched kick beats, every second bar snare hits etc.. in their own midi part (labelled for your convenience) and you can also include a library of drum grooves in the drum groove midi part (again - labelled). You can even load up the latest groove you've made from the GrooveMaker project file that I recently posted.

Anyway - the idea is that you use a simple arrangement and have midi parts feeding to the eXT plug-in with midi channels matching the midi parts. This is also labelled to make things easier.

Now you might put in a 4 bar kick drum part in the main sequencer on channel 1 and put a 4 bar note (C1) which will trigger the C1 kick part in the kick midi comp.

Then you can do the same for a snare part on midi channel 2.

If you want to use standalone you'd use the Sequencer comp labelled GrooveBuilder and attach the midi ports directly to the midi comps (no need to go through the midi channel comps - you can delete them if you like).

The sequencer is already set up for the purpose of building your drum part.

In each case replace the "Replace Me" sampler comp with the plug-in comp of your choice.

When you've got your drum loop just as you want it - you can either extract all the individual midi parts that make up the loop and input them into your arrangement or you can use the master out to record the loop as audio to arrange in Acid or in an audio track in eXT. It's pretty flexible I guess.

You can get the project file HERE

I haven't included a library of midi files for you I'm afraid except two sample kick and snare parts just so that you can see it's set up properly and to give you the feel for how the project works. The library building is up to you.

I may put out a bunch of boring midi parts that you can import into and save with the project file should you wish.

Anyway - I hope someone finds it useful. For that matter I hope I actually find it useful.

Feel free to adjust it as you will.

Another new one I've put together:

SongConstruction

This one is making use of the docking (a little) and a potentially time-saving way of organising tracks when creating a song.

Previously it was going to be multiple arrangements but after jorgen hinted at some nifty functionality regarding marker tracks I'm piling it all under one arrangement.

The structure:

Track 1 - Song marker track.
This is where you create intro, verse1, chorus markers etc....

Track 2 - Sections marker track.
This is for smaller groupings - you might have a loop of 4 bars and then a different loop of 4 bars to create the verse. It's more for when you are constructing loops rather than song sections I guess.

Track 3 - Project Folder track.
This basically has 2 tracks that allow you to use NicFit's AutoNote to save project notes or lyrics. If you haven't got this - get it :D .
Buggered if I can remember where though. Scream for NicFit and he will answer I'm sure.

Track 3 - Chords Folder track.
This is like a small reference guitar strum library with all root notes covered. This serves a couple of purposes: 1 to drag into the Chords construction track (below) to create your chord progression. 2 to use as a basis to build rythm guitar parts (or even to analyse to find potential harmonies, counter-melodies etc.)

Note: These small midi snippits were taken from a recent ComputerMusic CD. I somehow doubt anyone in this wide world is going to care than I'm distributing them like this. But if you think this is wrong, let me know and I'll create my own ones instead. Was just trying to save time.

Track 4 - Construction Folder track.
This housed three midi tracks - Melody 1, Melody 2, Chords. This is handy to just program your progression and melody. The tracks themselves would probably be deleted from the final project. The chords track can be built with the small snippits found in the chords folder track.

Track 5 - Drums Folder Track
A nice set of drum parts including a trigger track for drum loops you may have.

Track 6 - Bass Folder Track
A couple of midi tracks for Bass.

Track 7 - Guitar Folder Track
Two rythm midi tracks and two lead midi tracks.

Track 8 - Keyboards Folder Track
Two piano midi tracks, one epiano track and an organ track.

Track 9 - Strings Folder Track
Contains two ensemble midi tracks, a cello and a violin track.

Track 10 - Synth Pads Folder Track
3 Synth Pad midi tracks

Track 11 - Vocals Folder Track
Contains 5 audio tracks

Feel free to give any feedback you like or to massacre this project file beyond recognition. I may update it when I build on it etc...

Hey Caleb, Rozzer, Shane et al.

Thanks so much for these templates. They have really help me get a grip on getting shrinkwrap off of this amazing program. I now have sound and the arp working:love:

I am have trouble with the Song Construction template. I have installed NicFit's AutoNote and can open it in an empty eXT instance. Ehen I try to open the XT file you post I get an error message indicating that AutoNote cannot be found. Do you have any idea why that should be?

Thanks again,
Gordon

Just wondering. Have I pissed off this bunch? I seem to be a pariah here.

I very much doubt it. From my limited posting experience (look at that woeful post count!) but long time lurking I think I can safely say that you couldn't run into a nicer bunch of people. I don't think I've ever seen you ruffle anyone up the wrong way either so I suspect it's just that they're spending all their free time creating more useful stuff for the rest of us to leech rather than browsing through the forum :D

Regards,

Derek.
Less than 1000 posts and writer's block has set in :-(

Thanks Derek.

I believe you are right Jorgen is a real prince and Jens has been very patient with my moron questions.

Just a bit overtired and ginchy today I guess.

Hi Gordon.... sorry for the late reply, but I'm playing catch-up after the holliday last week. I did see your post, but I have no idea why. I downloaded Calebs preset and it opened fine...but it could be that you have a different version of "AutoNote.dll" than he used in his preset?...can you tell me the date on the file? ...and be sure it's not "AutoNoteB.dll"

thanks,
nF

Thanks NicFit. Yup! It's AutoNoteB. I'll go get regular AutoNote. Then I will find out what it does. I have no idea what it is supposed to do.

Where can I find Autonote? All I can find is the ~B version,

Here you go

you may wanna replace this older plugin with the "B" version once you open the project. But the only real difference that I can recall is I removed the "Clear" button...cause it actually deleted the txt file, I made the text area bigger and also the font color can be saved with the patch.
