Questions re microSD size limits

Let's say a product specifies the maximum microSD card size to be 64GB how reliable would that be do you think? Presumably this is a how long is a piece of string question but bear with me.
Tablets constantly receive new OS updates so surely this would address these limitations at the same time. I can't imagine a retailer updates their spec sheets each time a new OS is released.
I'm specifically talking about Android tablets if it matters.
Also, why are there restrictions? From a layman's perspective why can't the developer simply denote the maximum SD size to be say 10TB? Why is it necessary to specify the maximum limits prevailing at the current time of the technology?
Essentially I'm trying to ascertain if a Lenovo tablet that currently specifies the maximum SD size as 64GB will accept 400GB. I have Googled and it looks promising however the above questions are just for my own curiosity.

Good question. I can only imagine that it is a physical limitation of the slot. Like mainboards, which can only take RAM up to a certain size. Don't think it's a software thingie.

Ah ok, yes maybe.chk071 wrote:Good question. I can only imagine that it is a physical limitation of the slot. Like mainboards, which can only take RAM up to a certain size. Don't think it's a software thingie.
I have been reading that some tablets specify 64GB as the maximum and yet people have successfully used 256GB.

I notice on microSD (and regular SD) there's naming conventions/logo after the SD like microSD, microSD HC & microSD XC... which I guess use different tech to fit storage into the same form factor. So I think it's more whether the device can use those hardware formats rather than the size itself
EDIT: From this guide it seems to be the following general restrictions of max storage for each type :
SD - Up to 2Gb
SDHC - Up to 64Gb
SDXC - Up to 2Tb

That is extremely helpful, thank-you.mcbpete wrote:I notice on microSD (and regular SD) there's naming conventions/logo after the SD like microSD, microSD HC & microSD XC... which I guess use different tech to fit storage into the same form factor. Presumably then if the maximum is specified as 64GB then it uses SDHC.
Therefore I'm out of luck with my intended tablet.

However the plot thickens as this one says the maximum is 128GB

Therefore it must be SDXC so why isn't it 2TB?!

This one is 200GB.

They still seem to be rather arbitrary IMO.

Ok so I get it now.
There are indeed card type limitations as discussed earlier however the manufacturer intentionally cripples the lower spec models in order to encourage upgrading. This one is limited to 400GB.

I don't want 10" though... 7" is perfect for my immediate needs.
