download GIMP for free. great, easy enough free alternative to photoshop. I use it for making album covers and stuff.
just make a new file with this dimensions and use the type tool to put your name, choose what ever cool font you want

Yeah, this is teach someone how to fish instead of just giving them a fish time.

I remember when I had to figure this out.

First of all, it's better to find something that is in the ballpark of a finished result than to try and create something in this form out of something that is say square. One thing that's public domain is NASA. I got my Youtube banner from there. Check it out!


You do need software that tells you what the size is as you work, objectively speaking. If you don't hate this kind of result in the end, you could in fact stretch anything out to the size you need. Trial and error these things.
On the Mac side it's Preview. In this app, it's quite simple. Looks like this:

("scale proportionally" ticked will keep the dimensional relationship intact, it won't stretch it out.)

been a decade since I looked at Gimp, and at that time I had access to Photoshop and I can't recall even the workflow in that. There's a lot of stuff those kinds of applications provide you don't need for this, but if it's Windows I don't really know anymore. Here with this basic kind of a deal it's quick work. But again, I think if you can start with a long horizontal thing it might look more professional more easily.

Try canva dot com. It's one of those "easy online designer". You can make custom resolution.
