How do I do this, using the rotary controls of Push 2, on a track containing multiple clips, without consolidating those clips into one? Every time I record automation, if the cursor passes over a clip boundary it consolidates the clips.
Is it fact not possible, and do I need to edit the automation with the mouse if I don't want to consolidate?

Maybe disable global recording (red circle) and leave the Automation Arm enabled only (the stick with two circles on each side
)?

Happy to help!redlester wrote:Thank you.
You won't believe how long I fiddled around with this, and that was the only thing I didn't try!
Now, go and RTFM: https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/welcome-to-live/

Still doesn't work. If the global record button is disabled, it won't record any automation.antic604 wrote:Happy to help!redlester wrote:Thank you.

Having read and re-read the manual several times before asking on here, I've now noticed the crucial bit of information in the wording.
So am now reading it that in Arrangement view automation alone cannot be recorded, it has to accompany "material" being recorded, which in my case was silence but with the overdub button on, which does not delete the clips but has the effect of consolidating them. I think I'll stick to drawing the automation.Automation can be recorded to the Arrangement View in two ways:
1. by manually changing parameters while recording new material directly into the Arrangement.
2. by recording a Session View performance into the Arrangement (see 7.5), if the Session clips contain automation.

Finally sorted this.
To record automation from Push into Arrangement view, the channel on which the automation is being recorded needs to have it's input set to "No Input". The automation can then be recorded without consolidating one bar loops into one long clip.
