Can I ask someone to please indulge my technical ignorance and tell me if it's possible to set up two vsts and play them live from one midi keyboard. ie bass keys from one organ vst on bottom range of keys, and, you've prob guessed it!, top end of other vat on higher midi keys.Seen it for other DAWS but not MULAB7. As an secondary question, can I extend , octave down the bass range. Ive been struggling for three years with this so any help will be more than appreciated .Dom

Two VAT instruments? Sounds very taxing.

Check these MIDI plugins: http://www.niallmoody.com/ndcplugs/ndcmidi.htm

Q1) The "MIDI Note Range Filter" will do the job. Place one instance on every channel you want to control and set the note range according to your needs.

Q2) Don't get the question, but you probably find a solution on the linked page.

Some keyboards let you set a keyboard split point internally for sending on two MIDI channels. In this case, you could set each track in the DAW or the VST itself to the channel you wanted it to play the respective part on.

Use a MIDI note event filter plugin based on hi/low notes. Then by placing each VST on a separate track and using the same controller on both tracks you could achieve a split. Some DAWs include these MIDI FX, and there are 3rd party plugins as well.

Some VSTs that are multitimbral (such as Kontakt, SampleTank, etc) have multiple instrument slots internally. These can be arranged as splits by using the same MIDI channel as the controller or MIDI track for each instrument, but limiting the hi/low notes range for each instrument slot in the VST itself.

As far as shifting octaves go, some DAWs include a transpose function in the track inspector. They are usually marked in semitones, so [-12] would be a full octave lower.

My MIDI controller also has a button that lets me shift the whole keyboard up/down a full octave at a time with one click.

There used to be a keyboard split preset in Mulab, take a look at that (if its still there, cant check at the moment) its fairly easy to set up though, you can have as many splits as you want :)

Ugliness, however, goes right the way through
