I have to disagree with you 100%. Synth1 (IMO) is an excellent plug, free or not.
Take a test drive with the Synth1 Librarian from Neutrino Sky, and you will recognize the amazing breadth of sounds possible with this synth. Using the librarian, you can browse your entire collection of Synth1 soundbank zip files for sounds that match your search criteria based on tags. You might just discover something you have overlooked! It's free too!
Awesome, thanks zzz00m! I'm going to search for it and check it out this coming weekend!
You can find it here: https://neutrinosky.com/
He is planning to also do a similar librarian for Dexed, a free emulation of the Yamaha DX-7 synth, which has a bazillion free patches available online. The challenge is that a good database engine will be required to sort the bazillion patches. I'm sure it will be awesome!
Meanwhile, the Synth1 librarian will give you a whole new way to explore the sounds that have been created for it by many talented users.
