Kontakt 6 - worth an upgrade?

What's new:
  • Three new instruments, in the Play Series:
"Sonically rich sample libraries (Analog Dreams, Ethereal Earth and Hybrid Keys) that combine powerful sound design with simple playability. Each offers eight intelligently mapped macro knobs giving you a wide-sweeping, intuitive range of control. They all showcase KONTAKT’s new wavetable module, each offering two blendable sound sources and a unique take on a speciality style."
  • Five new Effects (including 3 Reverbs)
  • Wavetable Synthesis
  • Creator Tools:
"A a standalone application designed to improve the workflows of library builders and instrument creators. It consists of two elements: A Debugger, for identifying and fixing problems in KONTAKT script, and an Instrument Editor, which can load and run Lua scripts to automap samples, duplicate and batch rename groups, and copy settings from one part of an instrument to another."
"a unique take on a speciality style" screams niche product to me. And I wonder if those new effects have been retro-fitted into all the appropriate Factory Library instruments. And the Creator Tools will not be needed by 90% (??) of Kontakt users - they would be better off as a separate product (or as a Kontakt 6 Builder's Edition).

Is that worth £89 to you? Not for me (unless there is some must-have library in the future that requires K6 :)).

That right there is why I’m sure I’ll be getting this.

it won't take long until a "must-have" library for K6 arrives. NI must be already working on it.

I am pretty sure that especially the wavetable synthesis part will be used fairly quickly. But NI does not pressure with an intro sale. So there is time to wait and see how everything turns out. I am somewhat concerned about compatibility with Kontakt 5 libraries, or if an how Kontakt 5 and 6 can/need to coexist. Will need to see if there are any issues before I upgrade.

Could always use the Player. It's when the third party devs start requiring 6 full that someone might "need" to upgrade, and that's a ways off. And yes, different versions can coexist.

We'll see how "way off" it is or not. ISW team has K6 very much on the radar for some smaller synth-based libraries that might not be that far away. But they'll still be awesome. :)

I would think, although I agree you'd want to make sure, that K5 libraries (other than the old factory library which would be updated by NI) would work in K6. It would absolutely kill K6 if people found out that all the libraries they've invested hundreds or thousands of pounds in over the years don't work in the new product.

I've only had one product break back in the K3/4 days and that was a smaller company that made it.

Of course K5 libraries work in K6, that's a non-issue.

$89 doens’t sound like an unfair cost for what they’re adding, but if you’re like me and have Komplete 8 and consider the cost of $199 for all they’re adding, it’s a great value. That’s the key with NI. Getting Komplete at some point and upgrading it every 4 years.

Reading over NI's descriptions of Kontakt 6, I admit I am disappointed with it.
It sounds like the same old clunky interface with a few more bells and whistles, leaning on all the libraries of Kontakt sounds that have been developed for previous editions of this sampler to keep it in business. This is not the much-needed overhaul of its user interface to compete with much more engaging and flexible sampler-synthesizer combos like Halion. I'm just waiting to see if Meldaproductions comes up with anything better with its upcoming MSoundFactory before I just go ahead and buy Halion--and forget about Kontakt.

Anyone who purchased this have an opinion about the new synths?

Did NI update the legacy symphonic sounds at all or are they the dusty same ones as before?

I've only used Ethereal Earth, which sounds fantastic to me. I like the design of it, two sources and crossfade simple sound design with good control over the basics. There is some pretty choice stuff in presets already for a start. It's well-thought out.

I bought K6 immediately for 99 bucks (upgrade).

The plate reverb is a good one, as well. I haven't really explored it much, I have some monster libraries like Thrill to deal with atm.
