I want to start making music on the computer, never have before. After researching hosts, I have it down to FL, N-track, Making waves, and Orion. Having little idea what is going on, I can figure out N track and orion a little bit. Should I just pick one of them and run with it or look at the manual and figure each one out? can you tell me how these stack up, midi, audio , VSTi and mixing-wise??

Well.. there isn't any

1. Browse the kvr archive and read simular treaths.
2. Download demo's of the ones you're interrested in.
3. Buy one.

There is nobody here that can decide for you what you need, this depends on you, your workflow even on the interface you prefer.

Now if you insist and want to know what I use.

- Tracktion for studio work
- Live for live performance
And finally i get in EnergyXT at the moment.
Honnestly I think that EnergyXT could replace both, but it needs a certain time to learn it and I'm not ready yet.
For the moment I consider EnergyXT a bit like the linux of the music world.
- It is stable
- It has great features
- It is hard to learn
- It lacks a good and complete manual and tutorials that commercial software has. A couple of guys here work very hard on that and are doing a greate job, but it isn't finished yet.

try the demos is usually the first answer to such a question.

buy [insert poster's favorite host] is another possibility.

i'd say: try the demos and buy FL.

however, if you haven't done it already, you should seriously consider the following not-in-your-list hosts before any purchase:

- Traktion
- EnergyXT
- Sonar
- Podium
- and many many others...

I had another question, not related to this.
If I remember well, you speak french, don't you ?
The reason I'm asking is that i'm working on a song of wich the music is ready but don't find any inspiration for the lyrics

Would you be interrested to give it a try ?

I think the problem is that you arent reading the answers...here let me spell it out a little clearer. Here are your questions and the answers directed at them:

bucodi just tried to help by adding a few possable options you may have missed...you never did say what others you had though about or why you wanted the host in the first place...what are you using it for etc...so he tried to explain what hosts are good for what that he was familiar with.

There is lots of great info on all these hosts here...just look through the archives and do your own reasearch. Download demos and mess with them all...which SHOULD include using the manuals to learn whats going on with them...then choose the one thats right for you.

LOOK THROUGH THE ARCHIVES! There is plenty of info there on this...do your reaserch! Demo them all...you should be able to look inthe manual or spec them out on the manufacturers web pages if you cant find the info here...then use that info to compair them yourself. Then buy the one that fits your needs.

Bullshit. JaseisMusic asked very specific question and described his situation and what he has tried and in what stage his decission is quite clearly. Bucodi jumped in and played the smart ass without giving any valuable information useful for JaseisMusic, because about all the "advice" he gave was on things that JaseisMusic has most obviously considered already. Yes, all this can be read from his first post - if you do read it.

And BTW I'm sick of this wisenheimer "search the archives" advice. This is an online forum, and especially at KvR it is mostly unpossible to filter out the valuable information from numerous threads. Neither is the archived 'information' in any way structured. So if someone has specific questions, please come and ask! (@ JaseisMusic: Unfortunately I can't comment on any of the mentioned hosts here).
Furthermore, has it ever occured to you, TechnoWeeniePas and Bucodi, that even after trying a demo there could be unanswered questions left - especially for beginners?

No, as I wrote, I can't comment on those hosts, but I hate the presumptuous attidude against beginners that you just demonstrated out of stupidity (i.e. not being able to understand the initial post of JaseisMusic. Did he ask about Tracktion, Live and Energy XT? No, he has narrowed down his choice already.).

FL and Orion are more geared towards midi step sequencing. Both support VST's and have good mixing possibilities (someone even suggested recently that Orion can be good at mastering too). I've also been told that the two of them working together (rewire?) blow away Reason and all other similar products - but I guess that's just another subjective opinion. However, both are weak on audio compared to some of the more traditional sequencers (logic, cubase, etc), but both have good samplers in them. If you need to do audio you might want to look at tracktion (I haven't tried myself, got Cubase) as a low cost ($80 I think) option.

Unfortunately I can't comment on N-Track or Making Waves 'cos I know absolutely nothing about them.

Orion Platinum is something like $299 now. I find that price ridiculous. Pro might be OK/fairly value for money.
