I got a laptop with Windows 10 pre installed. Hatted it with a passion. Within 2 months I was back to Windows 7.

Upgraded 2 machines from Windows 7 respectively Windows 8.1 to 10. Never felt like going back, not a second.

One of the few annoyances are the half yearly major updates (I'd say, one major update in 2 years is plenty...), and, that you can't update when you want, in the Home version of Windows 10. Apart from that, super happy with it really. Many, many improvements, and, the performance is good.

I upgraded 3 machines, basically all other computers in the house. I regret it at least once a week, but I'm too lazy/busy to roll them back, plus my folks got used to 10 unfortunately. Nevertheless 10 is major PITA, initially it looked great, but it's just so stupid.
Just recently after a forced update the microphone stopped working in one of the machines, 10 blocks it for all applications (except Skype, because... why would it block Skype). You know, just in case a rouge application tried to record you some profanities...
The maintenance of 10 is now basically down to cleaning the mess the updates make and blocking the them, turning off win update, setting metered connection etc. Idiotic. I can see why 10 is supposed to be the last Windows.

I'm always amazed myself how different the user experience can be. ;)

Why a microphone should stop working is beyond me though. Actually, in my mind could only happen when there's a soundcard driver installed from Windows Update. Reverting to the former driver will probably solve the issue. After that, you can prevent Windows from updating the driver with the one from Windows Update. Will probably only work until the next big update, though. Although i think there is a way to totally exclude certain devices from being updated.

I've upgraded various machines from both Windows 7 and 8. I think I'm up to about 8 machines so far. I could never fathom going back - Windows 10 runs fine on all of them, and Windows 7 (especially) seems downright archaic by comparison. I hate using it.

I realize 7 runs a bit leaner on the same hardware though, especially older hardware, so there's that.

For kicks, I took the hard drive out of my laptop which has the free version of Windows 10 they gave away on it and put it in my 17 920 desktop system... It worked, and it was funny seeing Windows showing the true and usable amount of ram I have for the first time. It was in there for all of 5 minutes before I took it out...

The irony is that back in 2016 I bought a hard drive specifically to put Windows 10 on, before the upgrade became a paid situation, however everything about it looked awful, that I had to down load some hacks to make it look more like Windows 7, such as the Start Bar, other than that, it still looks like a bad GUI today, like some first year college kids had been Apple brainwashed from birth who created it, until some of the original Windows 7 designers have had to try and fix it and make it look better...and that's just the aesthetics.. It was the alien behavior, in that it had a mind of it's own in controlling what it wanted to do... what it wouldn't easily let you disable and try and block. I found it to be one of the most invasive operating systems I've ever used.. and for those reason's, I didn't upgrade to it..

I installed Linux on the hard drive instead, from there I can access all the ram my system has for particular programs that will work on it, like Cinema 4D for example using WINE. In the future... running Windows 10 or whatever they might call it, may come to a point where I return to 1984 and have my computer permanently offline.. like I had my Atari 800 XL....

Windows 10 Anniversary Update completely borks USB webcams. Yay.

Mhm. Just strange that both my webcams work.

But, yeah, if you don't actually use Windows 10, but just read about, then, sure. It borks everything.

Lol! Yeah, he tends to have a lot of opinions on things he doesn't use, strangely enough.

From the story you linked to, the ending opinion is:
With the next release containing a limited set of new features and Microsoft focusing more on polishing and fixing what is already there, the Windows 7 hold-outs should finally feel able to make the upgrade.
So... Time to upgrade, ScottyM? :)

It's not driver-related, more probably core-security& privacy. Previously any app could tap off your mic & cam and stream it all around the globe.

Haven't looked into this specific thing, but maybe apps need permission to get raw access to privacy-sensitive devices. Like, ehmm.. like your keyboard! ;-)

It is about the security, it's what I've been saying. It works in Skype. Games don't get permission. The user don't get permission to give permission. MS hijacked out mic in port... :x
It's my son's machine and we both really don't have time to dig for solution so, it's like screw it, no microphone it is, it's not that important. But maybe it is digged in the driver, we'll see.

Any tips or issues I could expect?

I'm wanting to keep all my files and applications.
don't update, go with a new install.

a new windows installation is a chance to clean your setup, why do you want to update and keep all the garbage accumulated since your win7 install ?
