So what are the improvements from smart eq+? Are they meaningful in your opinion?

Original EQ+ wouldn't save automated eq curves in cubase if running at 48khz. EQ2 does save at 48khz projects so this is a huge advantage.
EQ2 appears to take less asio/cpu than original EQ+.
EQ2 does a really good job on mix bus, reminds me of what Ozone wanted to be but didn't quite achieve. I had more luck with EQ+ on individual tracks than mix bus.

A number of good reasons to upgrade in my opinion.

I don't have it, but according to the Installation instructions on Plugin Boutique, you have the option of using serial key activation, OR you can iLok, but you need to send Sonible a support email with your iLok account. So you don't have to worry about iLok being required for install it seems.

I'm telling myself I don't need this because I work digitally and don't do recordings (reviews say it's less useful for digital only -- take a glance at the reviews linked on PB).

YES you definitely need the iLok licensing software installed for licensing but you dont need an ilok account and of course not an iLok hardware dongle.

A little strange, I have not often seen this before, they use the licensing software but once you have registered (with a simple license file and copy/paste) evrything is fine. I have learned the hard way cause I downloaded the demo from a reseller with no advice on this and wondered why my daw refuse to scan this...

But if you download it from sonible evrything is very clear and installation process straight forward.

Nope, it’s a serial number copy and paste job.

as far as I know Ilok software is required, even if you do not use their authentication system. (It is the same with the freiraum 1.1 version)

nope, just the serial is all you need - activation from within the DAW on first use. Same for freiraum. Neither show in my ilok account

Can confirm this 100%, I have 3 of there products, none have been iLok.

WHEN you have the ilok sofware installed no problem BUT you MUST have it installed. I learned it the hardway on my notebook these days as I tried to post clearly. NO ilok dongle NO ilok account but ILOK SOFTWARE NEEDED TO BE INSTALLED. Otherwise your daw wont even scan the sonible software.....sigh.....

Now I tried to install from a reseller demo (with no hint about ilok like in the sonible installation instructions where it is cleary stated: 1. install demo 2. install ilok softare 3. choose demo or enter serial) on my notebook and nearly get mad cause it just wont show up in my daw threw plugin scanning. After installing the ilok software evrything was fine but it dont show up when you enter "try demo/enter serial", it just runs in the background.

Sonible stipulate iLok must be installed. But thats all, no account or dongle needed.
You can request an iLok licence though if you email them if you prefer that over c/r.

You have to email your ilok username and your plugin code to Sonible and they'll do it.

They are using the iLok software to generate the unique fingerprint ID for your computer. Which they use to generate an authorization. All challenge response systems work like this, they generate an ID for you computer and then using your serial number create a key that works on that computer. I guess rather than trying to roll their own computer fingerprint system they are just using iLok's. As a result you must have the iLok software installed, but they aren't using the soft iLok for authorization. I suspect it's cheaper for them, plus they can handle the cases where you lose your soft iLok (format the hard drive) directly. Seems odd that iLok would approve or support this, but I guess that's their issue.

You can send them email to put a real iLok license in your iLok account, but the license is a hardware iLok only license, not soft. They responded to these requests very quickly and now I'm using my hardware iLok.
