Loud Breaks

Can anyone recommend CD's or downloads of loud, heavy breaks, a la Lunatic Calm? Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there's a world of jazzy/funky/hiphop breaks, but no full-on bashing stuff. Not that I don't like jazzy/funky/hiphop, but...

have you tried really dirty compression with a little overdrive/distortion? i've found digitalfishphones' blockfish compressor is great at turning hip-hop grooves into beats of a destructive nature. especially when coupled with a nice bit of distortion/overdrive.

Heh. Every song I make has a blockfish at the end of my drum mix.neverwhere2012 wrote:have you tried really dirty compression with a little overdrive/distortion? i've found digitalfishphones' blockfish compressor is great at turning hip-hop grooves into beats of a destructive nature. especially when coupled with a nice bit of distortion/overdrive.
It certainly does add a mean streak to drum loops, but there's only so far you can push it before the drums start to take over the mix and lose impact. Even then, it still doesn't have the same character as someone really coming down hard on the drums and going nuts on the cymbals.
I've tried building my own loops but they always sound too bloody programmed, and spending time 'humanizing' them could probably be better spent writing the actual music.
heh. Maybe I'm just a nit-picking asshole.

if you have enough pre's/mics or money lying around, try and find a "metal" drummer to record or bring into a cheap studio. nothing beats the real thing

Finally got a chance to listen to those demos...it sounds like there's some of what I'm looking for, and a lot of useful loops for a more electronic sounds, but I'm not sure it's worth buying for the few loops I'd use.sleepingsword wrote:I know nothing of a la Lunatic.......

Thanks for the heads-up.
The search continues...

That might be what I end up doing...it would have been nice to be able to cheat though.neverwhere2012 wrote:if you have enough pre's/mics or money lying around, try and find a "metal" drummer to record or bring into a cheap studio. nothing beats the real thing
I am however checking out the Kingston Easyrider samples to see if I have better luck building beats out of those.
Hmm...these forums need a little 'metal salute' icon.

a little bit of an afterthought, but drumkit from hell 2 is about as heavy as it gets, and i believe most stores are selling it for $99. you may want to look into that, though you'd still have to program your own beats.skull_cowboy wrote:That might be what I end up doing...it would have been nice to be able to cheat though.neverwhere2012 wrote:if you have enough pre's/mics or money lying around, try and find a "metal" drummer to record or bring into a cheap studio. nothing beats the real thing

I use DFH2 and it's right up your alley for that sort of thing. Group the outputs to a submix and compress the hell out of it! Warning though, DFH2 is really, really buggy. I have numerous issues with mine. The sounds are good though!

Funny, Lunatic Calm used to have loads of free loops on their website, but the site does not seem to work anymore
I have them somewhere if you want, I'm sure I could get them to you somehow.
The thing I find with breaks, is that every song requires its own blend of chops, hits, layers/eq's, etc etc. The problem with CDs like Breaks from the Nu-Skool, is that you get one variation of what is usually a very full, produced loop. The likelyhood of any of these loops fitting perfectly in a song is minimal, unless you start with the loop, and build around it.
Always best to roll your own I find

I actually do have them. Some are alright, but suffer from being mostly mono, and have the mp3 squiggle on some of the cymbals.Rozzer wrote:Funny, Lunatic Calm used to have loads of free loops on their website, but the site does not seem to work anymoreI have them somewhere if you want, I'm sure I could get them to you somehow.
If I ever get to record a drummer, I swear I'll release those samples for free, because hunting down the right sound is just a gigantic pain in the arse.

Yeh, I never found much use for them either. Its always interesting (and slighly depressing) when an artist gives out some free samples/loops, and you discover that the samples they use are just as crappy as the samples you already have on your hard drive.... (EDIT: by crappy I meant the content of the loops, which was nothing particularly special, rather than the encoding or format.)skull_cowboy wrote:I actually do have them. .. like I said, its what you do with them that matters, not the samples themselves.
On an other note, if you're wanting that real drummer vibe, you could do alot worse than BFD. It really is excellent, and with the right processing and garnish, could easily be turned into a Lunatic-esqe monster
