Maybe it's me, but wasn't the plugin market already saturated years ago?!? aka Stop with the new plugins, already!!

I am a hypoconsumer of research. My brain is saturated with abandonware, from too many obsolete plugins inserted in those all-important developmental Windows.Gamma-UT wrote: Tue Oct 30, 2018 10:53 am If the depth of your research is a quick lookup on Wikipedia, I can see how that happens.

If that's deep I'm going to advertise the puddle on my path as a swimming pool.Michael L wrote: Tue Oct 30, 2018 10:28 amYou are quite perceptive. An anonymous deep thinker actually did write it in Wikipedia!
I would have cited the quote, but did not think anyone would be interested. Thanks!

It's all relative. In a kvr thread on the plugin market, a Wikipedia quote is considered "deep" but still requires a full academic citation to be taken seriously by rigorous plugin researchers.do_androids_dream wrote: Tue Oct 30, 2018 11:47 amIf that's deep I'm going to advertise the puddle on my path as a swimming pool.

googling that sentence [within proper quote marks] shows page after page of it replicated verbatim. I'd hate to have to cite its origin at this point.

the market has always been saturated, but mostly with crap. Now its slowly getting saturated with higher quality plugins.
i blame the high end devs for making users demand other devs up their game

- the sentence may well originate in the Wiki.
Conspicuous Consumption appears to originate with Thorstein Veblen in 1899, in The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions

.. and because there are six degrees of separation between the bloggers on the kvr blog who cited the quote and the Wikipedia bloggers who made up the quote, deep plugin researchers can track those six degrees through posts in the blogosphere that slowly morph between writing about plugins and about consumerism.

A reason why Waves can't charge 500$ for a plugin anymore and almost, if not all of them, on and off are for sale for 29$. Those that bought them for the full price 10 years ago must feel likeSHall1000 wrote: Mon Oct 29, 2018 2:28 pm I think the most obvious sign of saturation is the relentless downward trend in prices and almost constant sales.

And still many pro engineers use Pro Tools EQ and Compressor. What does that say? A new and better plugin does the job better or the knowledge how to use a plugin does the job better?djanthonyw wrote: Mon Oct 29, 2018 7:47 pm Don't want new plugins? Then don't use them. And if it's a compressor, make the processed clip way louder and people believe it sounds way better.Michael L wrote: Mon Oct 29, 2018 7:51 pm Also, I think there's a common delusion that newer-sounds-better, but its often just a snazzier GUI or better presets.

As to the topic... It doesn't matter really. An overly saturated market corrects itself. People have to make money, so if the market is too saturated and there's not enough customers, developers will close up shop and move on.
Then there'll be less, followed a surge of new developers and new products, followed by another decline and then repeat until the next big technological advancement, followed by the next, followed by the next followed by the end of it all. Goodbye and thanks for all the fish!

Absolute freedom would be anarchy, hell.
