So they didn't drop the dongle, it seems. Not a troll attempt, I read here from one of their forum mods that there was a possibility for it to happen.

Would love to see that post.

Was it they will drop the dongle and allow software e-licensing or drop e-licensing all together?
(I dont' see either happening anytime soon)

The post was about dropping eLicenser altogether. It's embarrassing, but... I neither remember the posters name now, not do I remember the topic he posted it in. All I know is that I saw him on the Steinberg forums, and he is a mod there. He mentioned dropping eLicenser is a possiblity, no definite stuff.

Strongly doubt it. This is one of their USP’s of Elements. That said doing so could allow them to more closely align the code across all 3 versions...

"Oooh I dont know. Sounds a bit scary"
"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"

Ok, as I am sure you know SB bought the e-licenser company a few years ago.
Would be strange for them to advocate others still use that technology if they stopped using it.
And as two others have mentioned here, apparently e-licenser hasn't been 'defeated' in quite awhile.

Sure, but, from a business point of view, it would probably rather be interesting how many people would buy Steinberg's stuff if there wasn't eLicenser. A question only Steinberg can answer.

And the pros and cons of such a decision.
We shall see.

i hope it is not 12 giga of loops...
There's a fair chance of that. But I think Groove Agent 5 being 32gb, the bundled SE version might take up quite a lot of those extra GB.

waste of space...i'm really curious to know how use the loops!

Don't you have the option what to install? Or its the download size that is the issue?

The chances of Steiberg dropping a 100% secure copy protection system are close to zero. I would imagine 3/4 of their revenue comes from repeat business, professional users who have used Cubase for decades and have no issue with dongles as they do all of their work from one computer that never moves.

I think 9.5 is 18gb so just 3gb extra if you are upgrading from that.

I thought that too woodsdenis, but the 18gb is the installed on disc size. The download itself for 9.5 is 12gb, so 10 is a big step up.

Copy protection - there will be no change for now, but Steinberg reps have publicly said they are working on a new account-based solution:
Daniel at Steinberg wrote: Thu Jun 07, 2018 10:45 pm It would be imprudent of me to make any promises on behalf of the team working on this, but I don't think it's revealing too much to say that the new system will be account-based and rely on periodic connection to a license server out on the Internet to validate that your specific user ID is allowed to run the software, with tokens provided on a more temporary basis to your computer to allow it to run. Although it's not a given that this means that you will definitely be able to run a single license on two computers at once, the planned approach certainly makes this possible. In other words, it will be a matter of policy rather than technical limitation as it is today, which I think is a step in the right direction.

...but it definitely won't be ready in time for C10 (the box includes an elicenser) so would be wonderful to not have 10,000 posts about it in the C10 thread.
