Cadmium. One of only two software synths I have added in 2018 (the other was Chipsynth PortaFM).

This synth has a sort of "West Coast" approach and sound that appeals to me: complex, shifting timbres from audio rate modulation of simple waveforms, not necessarily at exactly perfect ratios. It cries out for something like VCAs to modulate modulation amounts, for PM synthesis for instance, but I'm told that's coming in a future update.

Close runner ups only because they all hit me in December 2017: Aalto; Mutable Instruments Plaits, Stages and Marbles.

I smashed a Yamaha SY85 to pieces. It was great fun.

Obviously, U-he's synths: Ace, Bazille, Diva, Repros, Hive and Tyrell. They're all BEASTS. Unbeatable. The best of the best.

But I couldn't live without Absynth, too. The most otherwordly sounds you can produce in a computer. Plus hundreds of Reaktor ensembles, but that's cheatng.

I'm glad some people mentioned Aparillo and Factory. Kinda niche, but so unique.

Bazille, hands down. Such a marvelous piece of code. My very fav synth, period.

I don't have a LOT of fun with synths alone.

I have a VERY BIG LOT of fun with the awesome modular system formed by my daw (Logic) + synths + kontakt banks + fx's used in regular ways and non-regular ways.

But my most used synths this year are Zebra2/HZ, Avenger, Cypher2, Repro5/1, MS20, Polysix, Phonec.

And Byome after them is a fantastic new toy.

Giving this a second run: I tried Thorn demo yesterday, and now I understand why the fuss. Amazing sonic possibilities right at your fingertips, streamlined interface, very responsive, super fun glitch grid, surprisingly powerful distorsion, and an overall feeling of "I don't know what the hell are these knobs doing but it sounds fun"

Although it's not a synth I'm having a lot of fun using Colour Copy. It can really create those 'out there' sounds! :D

The new procedural wavetables function in Hive is a nice 'challenge' too! :borg:

And there's a greatly overlooked and underrated great new FM Synth: Aurora FM. (Now with new waveforms!) I'm enjoying that very much too! :)

Runners up: Fathom, Aparillo, Tera, Dune
