I just got the e-mail from Splice in which they offer SO4 for rent to own (17$ /month).

https://splice.com/daws/38650984-studio ... y-presonus

I'm not interested in this offer but i would like to know your toughts considering this offer and in rent to own concept in general.
Thanks in advance for responses :tu:

Finally a DAW made it to Splice! I'm all for rent-to-own, but never for just renting.

Presonus states that when you've paid off the full price, SO is yours to keep forever. So it's not really software-as-a-service thing.

Nice. For those not owning it already. :)

Amazing!

This is nice. I would like to see this on like Reason or Cubase too! :)

It’s called a «credit card».

My thoughts..... Just, no no no no no.... don't bother renting to own Studio One... not when there's a possible opportunity to pick it up at half price each year, or reduced cross grade pricing.

I had to LOL at the - "Try Studio One Professional free for 14 days"

Studio One Pro has a trial period of a month before it expires, and from there you have the free Prime version.

In not far off 6 months, Presonus could very well have Studio One 4.5 out in May of 2019 given the apparent release between 3.5 and 4.0. You can't upgrade something you don't own... by my logical thinking.

You'll end up paying far far more.. than you would other wise.

In 2014, I picked up Studio One 2.6 Pro for £110 at sweetwater during black friday, 6 months later I upgraded for the near the same price.

If you don't have Studio One yet.. don't fall for this...

I agree with this, but as far as i understand you can "rent" SO for only one month, and after that you can cancel further payment and wait for some deal to buy full version, i guess that's why in this offer you are only allowed to try full version for 14 days.
Yeah, i know it's stupid when you can download 30 days trial from presonus site, but ..eh, i guess it is some kind of weird marketing strategy

Wonder which version you own by the end, the one you started paying off or current at that point?

I did the rent-to-own thing with Serum thru Splice. It’s a great program. Very fair deal all around. I think the only thing someone might complain about would be that your plugin or DAW is online authorized until you are completely paid up (they give you a serial number then). Some people really hate having to be connected to the internet with their music computer, so it would be a no-go if you happen to be one of those people. Otherwise, I think it’s pretty cool.

Not 100 percent sure about the Roland Cloud plan yet. They charge 20 bucks a month and then let you keep 1 plug-in at the end of the year. Sounds kind of expensive right now, and the whole program still seems in its infancy (but, looks a little better every time I check). If Roland put together some kind of a DAW environment to work with their plugs, I would think it would have more appeal for the fee.

TBH, I'm happy about as many purchasing options at possible. You can buy full price, you can buy discounted, you can rent to own. Doesn't get much better than that. Hope other DAW's will follow.

I don't have a crystal ball for what 2018 will offer and at what price but a Black Friday deal from last year...offered this.

"PreSonus: Until November 27th, PreSonus’ DAW Studio One and its notation software, Notion 6, are 50 percent off. That means you can nab Studio One 3 Artist for $49.50 (normally $99), Studio One 3 Professional for $199.50 (normally $399), and all crossgrades and upgrades at the same 50 percent discount. During the sale, Notion 6 is $74.97 (normally $149.95), and all crossgrades and upgrades have the same 50 percent discount."

Sure, but if you own current version at the time you payed it off/last installment, than it's moot really, so anyone knows?

I might stretch my payments for like 5 years, if I need the DAW few months in a year for some projects, wonder which version I get when I reach my last installment and if in my third year for example S1 v5 comes out, do I continue renting v4 or new v5?
