You can read a hot, off the press, review of SONAR 4, from Rip Rowen, (which was officially released last Thursday). Yes, it seems, www.prorec.com has risen from the ashes, with new forums and articles. Here is a quote from Rip:

Those who have read my reviews for a few years know that I’m not one to pull punches. I am always ready to expose a lousy product for what it is, or to point out glaring defects if I can find them. I have been a SONAR user for some time, but I have always maintained the advantages of other applications, such as Nuendo’s power, or Vegas’ simplicity, or Acid’s singleness of purpose. And I have never shied away from an opportunity to blast a failed effort, such as Cakewalk’s Pro Audio 7, or the Waves NGB using Pace Interlok copy protection. Fact is, I really couldn’t find anything at all about SONAR 4 I didn’t love.

Looks a bit like Tracktion in places. Navigator, colours, freeze....

While I completely respect those who like Sonar and the Cakewalk series, all I could think of while reading that review was, "That's in Cubase. So is that. In fact, that looks just like Cubase..."

I was hoping to see a bunch of features that weren't in Cubase. Maybe Sonar already has some standout features. The one I did see, though, was the looping features...those looked interesting.

Well its possible it actually has a freeze function that works. That would be good. Looks very well rounded to me - certainly has learnt a few things from it's competitors but they all do that don't they?

That first screen shot made me think Tracktion though.

Hey, you know what they say, imitation is the best form of flattery....combine the best features from Traction, SX, Nuendo, Samplitude & ACID, add in a few new innovative features, solid stability and no nonsense copy protection and you got....................SONAR 4

Does that mean your ditching Acid?

Unlike Cubase,Sonar's freeze never claimed ram and still doesn't,and now it's a one button operation.Although Cubase has a new stretch function,I didn't see anything on the feature list for ver 3 that included Acid Loop import.Multiple editing of slip edits is another that Cubase doesn't have, nor slip edits to begin with(that i know of anyway).Although some new features are borrowing from other apps(Effecting, muting individual clips like Samplitude)the 3 afformentioned features set it quite far apart from Cubase.

I'll have to wait and see all the improvements S4 has in the looping area first. Some of the new Loop Contruction enhancements that intrigue me, in S4, are the slice-based envelope controls of gain, pitch, pan and slice preview. Also, it seems, Cakewalk has taken Track Folders to a new level, by allowing you take any collasped Track Folder event and instantly turn it into a Groove Clip/ACID loop  I don't even think ACID 5 will have these features.

(honestly, this talk makes me wanna try it, too. the keyword being Tracktion-like)

Does anyone know if it now handles VSTs natively or does it still require a wrapper like in previous versions?

looks like they stole the navigator view among other things from Live, I like sonar, spent almost 4oo bucks on it by the way if anyone wants to buy it from me for cheap pm me, any way the first thing I thought about when I saw this article is you know the next version of ableton live is going to kill it, in the interest of making things simpler the traditional apps are still bloating, i imagine they will continue until they burst. there are definitely some nice features there but it looks like it will take two people to lift the app, these manufacturers are kind of like the big record labels, they just don't get it yet.
Live 5 will turn these trad. sequencers on their heads when it comes out while at the same time improving workflow (if thats even possible) and simplifying the user interface, not to mention it will have a few goodies that these other guys just aren't capable of.one could look at Live 4 right now and almost kid ones self what Live 5 is going to be like only knowing that it's going to be damn good that's for sure.

@ stale bread

there won't be one host for everybody (thankfully). they all nick ideas from each other, which is a good thing imo.

what's important is that sonar 4 is here and now, live5 is somewhere in the not so near future.

anyway, t2.
